Show CLAP it will hurt oar democratic friends not a little to be defeated on monday and when defeat doob come we are afraid that many will not acknowledge that it is the superior principles of sound logic believed in by the republican party that has appealed to the conviction of the general public and div u ho republic cans a majority of the voted cast it will be hard for the democrats to concede this and we baay expect to hear a good deal of talk from them about church influence being used or in other words the influence of men who have figured conspicuously in a church capacity already do we find evidence of this kind of shallow murmuring on the part of the opposition on press for example a small paper published in payson babbles in tho following strain it seems to us that there are enough people in utah and good honest people too that are not really conspicuous in affairs to handle the political question without men who have heretofore been looked to and respected by everyone as guides in religious matters making themselves in some instances the leading spirits in their party campaign work and practically using the personal influence they have gained from the people in other relations to further their cause our democratic friends in utah as elsewhere m this great country of ours are the kickers you cant make them happy or please them by anything you say if you are a be publican they have acted throughout the present campaign like the bad natured little girl who wanted to pack up her doll and dishes and not play while their own press and party organs have been abusive and even vile at times the republicans have not felt offended they have regarded it all as the lion in the in the fable regarded the gnat which stung his ear too small to be noticed but democrats have constantly worked themselves into a rage over what has been uttered by Ee publican orators and over what has appeared in republican papers they have felt offended throughout the entire political fight aud we expect them to feel disgruntled when election is over because victory did not perch on their banner however we hope their better judgment will restrain them from offering any personal insult to the men who have taken active part in bringing about the defeat of democracy oven though some may be prominent in church affairs this latter fact should not debar them from the exercising of the rights of their citizenship to the fullest extent understand us now none would be more grieved than THE to know that men high in ecclesiastical positions had prostitutes prostituted their sacred offices for political purposes we believe the church should be held aloof wo believe furthermore that not a single campaign speaker in the republican ranks has sought to unite the two nor has he sought to use church to forward the cause of his party |
