There is more meaning in the present war than there was in all the other wars of history. The meaning is so that few can understand it and fewer still will believe it. Just consider the following truths: ' It is the wrecker of the old structure which has served its time and done its best and its worst Wrecks have to hap-pen occasionally even Christ's life had to be wrecked before the glories of the resurrection could come to men. It is retribution a cleanser of the sins of nar.ions a puri-fier by firre a burning away of the dross. It is a destroyerof the shameful inequality among men everywhere. There can never be Peace, Progress and Plenty for all until conditions are made more equal. It will destroy the wicked and wickedn-s- s that stand in the way of a higher and saner progress. is the avenger of all the wrongs and infamies which rulers have wrought upon their people. It will prove to be the bearer of a new torch of. Liberty, a new Covenant of Freedom " '" " It is the birth pang of another New Ofder of the Ages The Truth About Japan The aggressions of Japan are as much a part of Armaged-don asthose of the larger. nations. Arm ageddon began in 1914 and will run well into 1948, and every nation on earth will be involved. Japan is also in a world-conquerin- g mood and has actually planned the conquest of the U. S. She will do a great deal of harm whereever she attacks, but in the mixup she will be destroyed. She has sown death in China and she will reap what she has sown, either in war or catastrophies of nature Now that Gov. Maw and the congressional delegation and the very libeaal national administration are doing so much for Utah let the citizens unite as one man behind ever detail of every program and proceed to make the state one of the real wonder places of the world. All join hands for Utah. America, You Must Live Free Or Perish The Demand Must Be, More Freedom, More Liberty, More Justice, More Plenty More Happiness When the government of the United State of America was set up it wap a New Order of the Ages. It would have re-mained so had not the International bankers and the profiteer made it oth- - rwise. It is now the duty of citizens to save all ' that is worth saving and build upon it abetter New Order with whichweonler into the sunshine he New Day. The following sentiment should be on the lips and in the heart of every American : "America is my land, and I love it. Not one inch of it will I yield to anyone, though he come blustering with mighty planes and ships and hosts of armed men and try to take it from me not unless and until a crimson tide engulfs it and here is no more blood to shed. Here was I born free; here will I live free or die. Death is the victory if freedom must 50" Editor Goodhousekeeping. PROGRESSIVE OPINION EDITORIALS By C. N. LUND Something Better Than Present Democracy Musi Come Out of the War. Something vastly better than the d 'tnocracies have offered in the past, and better than they now are offering, must come out of the war or else all of its suffering, death and destruction will have been in vain. The masses are still in desperate straights every where. The world is still full of "brutes who trade on hunger, who fatten on famine, who convert into money the life-bloo- d of the poor, the beauty of youth and the sweat of slaves." W ith all your faults, England and America, we like you still The collossal fortunes of Br tish aristocracy which have so long oppressed and denied the poor, weie built on child slavery, brewing and distilling projects, opium traffic con-quests, landlordism and other means of selfish and greedy wealth extraction and exploitation This massed wealth has been and is protected and nourished by the influence of church nnd state while the great souls, the immorrals of England w ho struggled for more justice, more equality, more human-itarian reforms, were i lied , ostracised and broken hearted for their efforts. If great changes for the better are not wrought out for the peop'e then all the blood of the soldier-marty- rs wil have been spilt in vain America, as much as the people love it, and as much good and glory as it has, must .be regenerated and have its soul restored Just look at the corrupt and venal character of its politics, the vast extent of its economic slavery, its lawlesness, its staggering corruption in high places, its shameless surren-der 10 the indecencies of sex, its irreligion and pagan philoso-phy of dishonest success, its dollar aristocracy its millions of paupers, and the fact of all its best interests being drowned in the infamo is liquor tra fic. If these things cannot be changed for the better then all of the efforts of the U. S. in this gigantic struggle v ill count for nothing. CIVILIZATION'S HOPE IGNORED A great author has said: ' There never was a time more cut off from Christ than ours, nor one whichneeded Him more." What a tragedy that He has been killed in so many of the hearts of men. His offense was that He loved people all people, and therefore they crucified Him. His method of government was "Love one another." His benediction was, "Peace be unto you." His last command, repeated three times was, ''Feed my sheep." He preached His gospel to the poor He comforted and sustained the widows in their affliction, and and ble sed the little children to whom He likened the King-dom of Heaven. He never let his hands or fingers touch the money of the world because He knew that of all the unclean things man has created, money is the most unclean. So much of what Be was and what He stood for has been thrown into ih-- discord by the war, but He "ill yet draw all men unto Him LEACHING COPPER I , - '! --' n . j,r . i --j " , 1 Huge layers of scrap tin and iron which will be turned to I Copper by precipitating or catching Copper in water at Y Bingham Canyon. Tin cans discarded in a stream by the wife ot a miner near Butte, Montana, led to scientific research that resulted in the saving of much copper which otherwise might have been lost, according to a legend of the. mining industry. , The water of the stream near which the miner hsd his cabin per-colated through the hills of Butte, picking up a certain amount of copper. Tin cans thrown into the stream by the miner's wife picked up a certain amount of the copper in the water and eventually the entire tin can was turned or re-placed to copper. This led to scientific discoveries that brought about copper precipi-tation, a practice now in Utah in an effort to save every ounce of metal to create industry and employment. One of the largest copper precip-itating plants in the world is oper-ated by the Utah Copper company B at the mouth of Bingham Canyon. 3 Like the mine itself which for so many years was considered worth- - less due to the small copper con-tent of the ore, the water which for so many years flowed aimlessly down Bingham Canyon is now being put to commercial use. For every ton of ore mined it is necessary to mine about a ton of waste and move it to nearby gulches. The water percolates through the great mass of waste which has been removed from the mine, leaches or picks up a certain amount of copper in solution. Ey diverting the water into a plant at the bottom of the canyon much of the copper is saved. The water is diverted into huge tanks which are filled with tin, preferably tin or scrap iron, which attracts the copper in the water and within a compara-tively short time the scrap is turned to copper. Try it sometime by placing your "Christmas Jewelry" in a pan ot water containing copper in solution. fishing pond and to the evenings at sunset when we played in our rocky front yard.. Nothing that I can buy with money can add to my happines " Is the statement made by this man true? Is it possible that money cannot produce happiness? Then why all this scrambling, worrying, excitement, pushing, to get money. C. V. Hansen. NO! it is not true. In the first place, this man must have had enough money to keep him till his investment had tribled. Now it is easy for him to say what he says. I wonld have said that if I had the home. Did he get happines in doing and giving a helping hand to those in need of a home. NO! It is money that counts ,dont tell me. Mrs. C. N.Lund Editor Progressive Opinion: Sometime ago we read of a man who had by hard work and close saving acquired a home and a little farm. He was induced to mortgage his property for 5, 000 and invest it in Ford Motor stock in 1903. It was with fear and trembling that he did it, but the first years dividends brought him back his original investment. The dividends and the sale of the stock at the end of sixteen years netted him $16,000,000. A friend asked him how he felt about it. Well, he replied, we aren't any happier. A lot of money can't bring happiness. Happiness dosen't come from things we take out of life. For real, pure happiness I had to go back fifty years, back to a cornfield, back to the most wonderful mother in the world, back to the little home that was surrounded with pinks and hollyhocks, back to the (Continued In Next Column) - World Banker Makes Confession Vincent C. Vickers, one time Governor of the Bank 0 England, was repentant and made a confession before he died in 1939 of which the following is a very brief outline, and tells some of the secrets of the most l:andalous racket in the world. The banking system is actively harmful to the state. It creates poverty and unemployment and is the root cause of war. Its experts have hopelesly failed. "Sound finance" means nothing at all, and is merely a bankers slogan to disguise the injustices of the credit system. It always sees to it that the demand for credit and currency always exceeds the supply so that interest tribute may be exacted to the limit. The disast-rous boom and slump cycles are one of the greatest features of the bankers monetary system and are created so that they can grow rich on the ups and downs of trade. T ere could be great changes for the better in the health, happiness, prosper-ity and welfare of the individual, of the community and the nation if the monetary system was reformed and made to function foe the benefit of the people instead of the profit of greedy money-monopolist- s. - - PFNSION PEOPLE PROGRESS The Utah State Old Age Pension and Assistance Organiza-tion is progressing and growing. Wednesday the Provo group had an outing in the canyon and put new pep into that part of the vineyard. Today the Salt Lake and Ogden groups are having an outing at Lagoon. The truth is that every problem that confronts mankind today was solved for him nearly twenty centuries ago. A gret Wayshower came and pointed the way and by his life proved how all these troubles could be prevented or overcome. His words were and are THE PLAN. His life was and is the in-controvertible evidence that the plan rill work for every man, woman and child, and for every nation. All man has to do is to follow Him, and by so doing lift himself up to the best Com-radeship ever offered to human beings. Though the whole world be destroyed his supreme commandment, "Love thy neighbor as thyself," and His Golden Rule will stand, and there will never be peace, nor abundance, nor security, nor true liberty and universal joy and happines until the race makos these two a literal and active part of its very life.
