Editorial Thought I Personal Paragraphs Of Interest Mr. George Stokes of Chica-go came in one day lust week. He told us that he w.s in Og-de- n on some business and hap-pened into the library where he found a copy of Progressive Opinion. He sat down and read it and found it so good that he copied the editorials and took them home to his wife who also greatly enjoyed them '1 he praise lie gave the paper in our presence was so profuse that we are too modest to publish it. While he was giving it we f thought of that sciipture pas sage, ' not without honor save " He is a prince of a man and is greatly interested in the right kind of national pension for t he aged. He repre-sents several Eastern papers and immediately sent one of our editorials on its way to them W. L. Grover reports that he has a son in India in the servi-ce of the government. A letter from him at Delhi states that he has seen the place where 2000 Brahmin priest lias said 10,000,000 prayers for peace and security befoie their Sun God. He tells some about in-- i flation in China where oranges and cucumbers retail at $2 each in Chinese money. Twelve pieces of laundry cost $12.50 razor blades $40 to 150, pres-- s sing of suits $40, and so on. He may be home on a furlough early in May. There will hereafter be one advantage in buying Progres- - siveOpinion. You wont have to pay either the luxury tax or the excise tax So don t be af- - j raid to come in and do business. , i Here is the kind of a man the nation has in General Mc Arthur: "However tired I may be, I never go to bed without reading a portion of this Book, the Bible." And General Eis-- I enliower says this: ' While the utterances of God as recoided in the Bible are ever the need of mankind, it is in war, and particularly the present war, with its issues of humanity and mortality that their essential . presence is felt " To Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Laraen a baby daughter. Sun- - day, March 28. SOLDIERS LOST ARMS, LEGS AND VOTES The most damning indictment of congressional treachery in its handling of soldier vote legislation came last month from, believe it or not H. V. Kaltenborn. Kaltenborn told of visiting the amputation ward of a large j military hospital, filled with maimed veterans of the Italian campaign. To sound out their political sentiments, he asked: "How many of you men have made up your minds to vote for Willkie?" Not a man stirred or spoke. "How many have made up their minds to vote for Dewey," Kaltenborn then asked. The same stony silence. How many have decided to vote for President Roose-velt," the radio commentator then inquired. And the air was filled with hands and the stumps of arms. Kaltenborn then pointed out that by its political maneu-vering, Congress has denied most of these men a vote. They have lost their arms and legs and now thanks to Congress they have lost their votes. International Teamster. EASTER C. V. Hansen There are no doubt a multitude of people who give very litl.le-i- f any at all- - thought to the importance of this day. To a woman, to Mary of Magdala, was given the honor of being th fi-- st among mortals to behold a resurrected Soul, and that Soul, the Lord Jesus. She and fhe other woman, who was wi'h her, told the wonderful story to the diciples, but to them it seemed like idle tales and they believed them not. Peter and John then ran to the sepulcre and in spile of fear, and anxiety, they were slow to realize the truths they had bet-- taught, there dp.wned upon them, even then, the trembling hope, which was so rapidly to become the conviction, that Christ had indeed risen from the dead But after being con-vinced, they were ready any time afterwards to give even their lives for thnt testimony. And through all future ages have sounded that solemn message, "Christ, the Lord, iias risen from the dead." Friend Wm. A. Prahl ip the chairman of the Geneology Committee in the Tenth L. D. S. ward. He has some original ideas and is doing some very good work. Political Items A political writer says there are indications of some little con-test for the Democratic nomin-ation for governor. Wait till the Capitol Hill machine gets up steam and the opposition will be completely plowed under just like some of the crops were To beat Maw they wiM have to get some one by the name of Bigger and he isn't around. TO DEMOCRATS There is no greater tribute can be paid a president than to be hated, maligned and l ed ab-out as he isin certain quarters in Salt Lake. This is proof of his destined mission. So did they to. Washington, Jefferson, Lin-coln and Wilson. There is not enough courage in Utah to make answer. We have defend-ed him, but noc one of the state officials has given an encourag-ing word or a dollar No oth-er paper has dared to put itself in the path of the powers that are so vicious in their attacks but it seems impossible to wring a word or a dollar from those who owe their positions to the president. But let them keep their emoluments We shall keep on defending and up-holding him even though we lose out by it. He is humnnitys man on a mission df destiny He needs prayers instead of nurses. Shame to those who seek to destroy the- - people's faith in their government. ' It doesn't take a Walter Win-che- ll t" make some congress-men reprehensible as they them selves do a perfect job of it. And in doing it they have brot .congress to a new low. EXCERPTS FROM THE BOOK WEEMS LIFE OF WASHINGTON This is the kind of a book that Lincoln read.. This only can the bliss bestow Immortal souls should prove; From one short word all pleasures flow, That blessed word is Love. If ever man rejoiced in the divine administration, and cordially endeavored to imitate it by doing good, George Washington was that man. Taught by religion that "God is Love" he wisely concluded those the most happy who love the most; and taught by experience that it is love alone that gives a participation and interest in others, capacitating us to re-joice with those who rejoice, and to weep with those who weep, he early studied that benevolence which rendered him so singularly the delight of mankind. The Great Deceiver or the Anti-Chris- t. A new book is being circula-ted, called The Great Deceiver, or The Anti-Chris- t. It tells of a certain man in Syria named Prince Baha, 34 years of age, a strange genius and mystic char-acter who is said to be the Deceiver and Anti-Chri- st spok en of by the prophets and des-t- i. ed to lead the Asiatic hordes against the white race in a war that will make the present war look like a Sunday School pic nic. The author says he has seen him raise the dead as lit-erl-as Lazarus was raised ;seen him command running waters to stop and wall up as did the Red Sea for' Moses; seen him calm !he storm and dispel the clouds as Jesus did; seen him bring down fire on a pile of logs etc. He is of a very fierce countenance, such as common mortals hardly look upon, but changes instantly from devil to saint when his face takes on a Christ like appearace. Such is the story the book tells. How much more will poor humanity liave to suffer before it lets in the light? Air: and Mrs. William Lund has just returned from a visit with rela tivesin Nevada. . Progressive Opinion, 217 David Keith Bldg., worth ten times its subscription price. THI THINK! Ever think, by way of comparison of the service men over there in the Foxholes standing day and night in mud and wa-ter and dirt, while here at home the salaries of big businessmen in 121 corporations have been increased as much as 3,700 per CPnt! Such is the case. Ever think of the boys who are cal-led sports in the big cities spend their nights at. clubs where waiter girls turn up their noses at $20 tips! Think also of the crowds at the races at the prize fights and other sports, enjoy-ing themselves while the boys Over there are undergoing such suffering as they are. There's a pay day coming to many of those at home. It is said that during an average year 225,000 American women gave birth to children without the help of a doctor; that of the 75,000 stillbirths a year, medical' experts estimate that 30,000 could be saved by better medical attention; that each year 100,000 Americans die from pneumonia and 62,000 from tuberculosis; that before " Jan. 1, 1943, more tharr 250;000 men had been rejecd ' by the draft because of illiteracy and low mentality, FOR A WORLD UNITED ORDER IS THERE ANY HOPE FOR IT? If more than one hundred and fifty nationalities can be welded together on one-sixt- h of the world's surface it can be done with the entire world. If exploitation of man by man can be effected among 190,000,000 people it can be dqne with all nations. If the people can be made secure in the owner-ship of the land, its natural deposits, waters, forests, mills, factories, mines, rail, water and air transportation, banks, in-surance, etc., then it can be done on all the face of the earth. When this is accomplished then scientific planning will' do the rest, and guarantee good homes, steady employment, per-fect security," general prosperity, peace, universal education, a flowering of culture. This is worth working for, worth fight--' ing for, in fact worth dying for if can be assured to posterity. COMPARE ACTIONS OF THE U. S. WITH THOSE OF ENEMY COUNTRIES When Japan had her great earthquake this country asked for $10,000,000 in contributions to help her recover from the disaster. This was greatly and given to that people. She paid us back at Pearl Harbor by the most stealthy and dastardly attack of murder and destruction in the annals of man. When Germany was struggling to recover from World War I America loaned her $5,000,000,000, which she used to provide secret arms and equipment for her army now killing our soldiers in Italy. That explains the whole dif-ference in the heart and desire of this nation and its enemies. The U. S. acted the good Samaritan. It desired no war, no conquests. But when civilization was attacked it laid bare its soul and went on the firing line for humanity. This nation has its faults many of them, but when time melts away ignorance and prejudice its record will shine clean and bright and history will write one of its most inspirational pages. Where Is He On This Easter Day? Some one has said that He is not in Europe and not in Asia nor Africa this Easter. Then He must be in Amcric v But how can He find His way am-ong all the Godless capitalistic institutions? How can He be heard above all the gibberings about money and property? H w could He get by all the paths of sin? Who would ac-cept His love. His compassion, His mo to of life? We believ He is hovering near all the ser-vice men because they are on H s errand. Called by the Vice-Preside- nt and the Secretary. O. W. Merritt, Secretary. Last Pub. Apr. 7. PREPARING FOR WORLD WAR m. WHAT SHALL BE DONE ABOUT IT? May we be pardoned for advocating strong measures in this editorial? It is plain to those who read and think and are honest at heart, that the ground work for World War HI is being laid. An article by Emil Ludwig in Magazine Digest tells it all. While people must stand by the government until the present war is won, they must begin to think about doing something to prevent another war. Our advice is that they band together and when they see signs of such another dis-aster coming on that they storm every capital in the world, find out all those of the ruling classes who are promoting it and quietly take them out and execute them. Begin with a dozen in each capital city.' If that doesn't stop it then take another dozen, and still another dozen, until no man in any capital city will dare to lift his voice for any measure that means war. Humanity has suffered sufficiently. From the dim beginnings war after war has come to blight the life of the people. In every generation the flower of nations has been destroyed. Shall it continue forever? Is it not better that a few die trying to prevent it than for each generation to throw its youth away in the mad paths of war and to endure the poverty and suffering that follow? CHILD WELFARE SERVICE IS A VERY NOBLE SERVICE Just as a movement is started in the nation to do more for the dependent, neglected and delinquent children, and to know how and what they are receiving from the govern- - ment federal, state and local, the state of Utah walked out of the picture and turned back $14,000 which the govern-ment has been giving to aid the state in this work, and sets up a program of its own which will be more or less dictated by politicians. This is altogether too bad. The Children's Bureau of the United States Department of Labor is carrying out a splendid program one program for the nation, not forty-eig- different and conflicting and confusing programs. Utah should have adhered to that program, especially, in the light of the fact that its capital ciy's arrest of minors in 1943 tops the nation by a large percentage. It is not good policy for officials to try to make themselves bigger than the govern-ment. Locked in the hearts and minds of the children lies the future and society must do its very best for them. It is an indictment that there is so much delinquency among them, so many of them underpriviliged which neither state or nation can afford to have continued. We stand for and nromote an economic system that does not thrive on exploita-tion; that does not breed war, poverty and inequal-ity; that promotes the good of all and makes for true ' and real Brotherhood. GENE SAYS THIS IS HIS VERY BEST He's Out to Change and Save Humanity. A Very Slow Process EARNEST MANIFESTO! PATH AND PASSPORT TO NEW ADVENTURES! (For yourself, and to and for members of your family, and friends.) Here is a strange new INVENTION, the "MENTAL CATALYST," differing from others in that it is PRINTED, here, on this paper! Great Truths are here placed di-rectly in the hands of man and, recognizing that he is a Divine aeolian harp, able both to receive and give out symphonies, employing this statement, man expresses new powers and delights. t TUNING can sweep the world as a new social custom and practice! Man rises to his dignity and true, august stature; "human nature" both as scapegoat and tyrant goes. A tremendous revelation to you though it should and may, at times, lead you to discard beliefs and practices, until now, long cherish-ed and followed! As you discard error and imperfection, and express only higher understanding, and other ones do so, too, so cometh to us, happily, God's true Kingdom. There is but ONE Law: You follow what is the Eternal, only, to you, hence-forth! (Jeremiah 31:31-34- .) The FIFTH FREEDOM (basis of all the rest and underlying them) , is man's desire for, and his ability to possess, JOY in the things he does. Any and all things which truly support and build man are GOOD, and give us satisfaction. It is attained through POSITIVE SCIENTIFIC RELIGION (often lacking, up until now) ; . it is entirely non-creed- yet it is to be injected into all creeds and into the lives of all of us, and it is, Our effort to find pertinent Facts and seek to apply them, directly, in helping our-selves and one another and humanity. And also through and with MENTAL RADIO, with 'TUNING,' (the thrilling, new, dynamic, valuable Psychology, giving man new privileges and powers!) which is more than merely 'tuning' OUT of our lower and inferior possibili-ties; it is, indeed, our active present effort to KEEP TUNED, or to change and tune INTO, all our higher, finest possibilities, (man's DIVTNE nature, no less), and to constantly serve and seek to IMPROVE (edify and help) one another rather than REPROVE (harshly condemn and, blame) one another. Or excuse or dodge issues. Edison, Steinmetz, and others have prophesied that man must, can, and shall make pro-gress in these important realms! Employing this statement, I sincerely believe that if any alert person will get one hundred other worthy persons, over the weeks ahead, to peruse it, and the holder and these others agree to particularly adopt these principles and attitudes and efforts toward themselves in their dealings and relations hereafter, myriads of amazing, new, valuable and joyous experiences MANY OF WHICH WOULD NOT OTHERWISE HAVE OC-CURRED can and will result! The technique is simply this, if any limiting or evil condition manifests or exists: Avoid mention of the evil or dwelling on it, (which focuses the mind on t'? ,0 evil, and is often unprofitable and frequently miy be harmful), but let someone, always, y ukes gest, "Can't we 'TUNE' to better Facts, higher attitudes?" Presto ! Be convince t trials! "According to thy faith, zeal, skill, intelligence, love!" Eugene Mid I WHAT COUNTS FROM NOW ON At the present stage of conditions the old sectarian and political ideas count for little or nothing. There are now but two forces two issues and mankind must choose one or the other. Either the world will live for many years under bar-barism, infamy, injustice; or it will live under a New Order of liberty and justice for all peoples. These are the two choices. |
