Show PROGRESSIVE OPINION Sutured u Second Ci Mtter t the Part Office t Salt Lake City. Uub. unaer toe Act or March 8, 18 z--' -- r: :: - fi'i 1 Food! Fr THnoingM What a boon it would be if redemptive love could have free course to do its full and perfect work! Then denom-inations would turn from minor religious issues The churches would correlate their forces and unite in setting in motion a brotherhood movement which would express itself through cooperatives for producers, marketing finan-ce and purchasing. Where profits accrue, they could be utilized in providing life, accident and unemployment in-surance and in organizing mutual aid and medical cooper-atives. If the profits make it possible, even educational cooperatives could be organized. Moreover, if world missions would organize Christian cooperatives clear across all the mission fields and actually realize redemptive love in cooperative living, where would materialistic com-- - munism have a ghost of a chance? All the beauty and utility, the glory and the freedom the world had before the war was the result of the practical and ideal vision of the dreamers. Very few of these dreamers of visionaries have been misunderstood and even despised of men, but they have always offered the world salvation, cloth-ed it with beauty, opened new fields of opportunity, drawn aside, the curtains of darkness and ignorance and let in the sunshine of truth and knowledge. How badly the world has treated many of them. All the time they have starved for the physical comforts of life Sometimes they were driven from society. Some have become martyrs. In spite of this they have always been right and have given mankind all it knows. They have laid the cornerstones of society. They have made all the sacred books, all the harters of liberty; and they have raised all the flags of freedom. They have taught mankind the meaning of truth, love liberty and the splendor of the spiritu al life. Don't wait uutil they're dead to honor them "The money power preys upon the Nation in times of peace and conspires against it in times of war. It is more despotic than monarchy, more insolent than autociacy, more selfish than bureaucracy. It denounces as public enemies-al- l who question its methods or throw light up- - on its crimes. William J. Bryan. Once upon a time when a great earthquake and a great fire visited the land of the Japs and the people were sorely stricken, even knocked to their knees more badly stricken than was the man who was ministered to by the Good Samaritan. It was then that this Christian country invaded them with ship loads of food, clothing and medicine fed them, clothed them and doctored them. How they thanked us. And to repay us and show their gratitude they came by stealth, cunning and malice, invaded our island possessions and poured on us all the deadly elements of destruction known to man, killing the flower f our manhood and destroying our ships and planes. Could Lucifer inspire human fiends to do worse? "To them who do good to you do good in return; to them who do eviladmiiiister justice." Men once looked tojthe past for the Golden Age. We must look to the future for our Golden Age. We must turn cur eyes forward into the days to come. The old (religions mnd salvation consist too much in believing. Pi The new gospel must make salvation consist in doing. In the world which we are trying to build, salvation must consist in perfecting one's self, and then employing one's talent to lift others. In the endeavor to lift others we shall find that we raise ourselves. In endeavoring to mnke life better and sweeter for others we make life better and sweeter for ourselves. Thus are we to be saved. Society is not at present organized to promote the best life so long as men find they are acting selfishly for themselves as against the rest of society. It is the dut of society to find out the people who can do the necessary work and then set them at it. The individual should be led to ask himself: Am I doing the best for society? Am I producing good things? Do 1 work with the thought that the consumer must be fed. We mnat get away from the idea of production for self alone; we must translate our interest into the common good. That is the higher incen-tive for good work and this is the in centive which brings. Oh.God, Teach the world's Christians the task of creating , cooperatives in which thy redeeming love shall find full and free expression and realization in our day. It is too bad to have to say that education is at fault, but such is the truth. It has carried on but part of the program that it should. By being al! too academic it has developed only the intellect and not the heart or spirit, thus missing the fundamental teachings that iead to true brotherhood. It has not attended to the development of the magnet of spiritual understanding which alone will unite people for peace. Our schools must begin and that right now, to acknowledge and emphasise the Fatherhood of God and the Brotherhood of man aryl the moral law in order to save itself and mankind from destruction. '.'." 7!p$ Before the awful crisis of the present day, before the greatest problems that e er confronted the world, material means have failed utterly. Money used to be able to settle anything, but not this time. Materialism and the kind of education we have been pursuing have brought the world to' the present crisis because they have omitted the one essential without which there can be no lasting peace. That one es- - sential is spiritual faith. Without that we will have to sur- - render to despair and darkness, possibly chaos. 1 he Scriptures indicate that the coming Beast will be an International ruler. U;.manage- - I ; :"-'--:; I; West Has Large Ore Reserves to Meet Cricis s metal mining is prob-ably unique in what It can offer in the current emergency. The mining industry has been crippled somewhat during the past few years, but it can rebound almost instantaneous to any stimulus. Mining booms take place over-nig-and there is sufficient smelting capacity existing in Utah to take care of almost any emergency. The lead-zin- c smelters only used about one-thir- of their capacities in 1941, due to the lack of ore production from smaller mines. In order to more clearly visualize the situation tor the reader let us take the ease of the metal lead. The reserves of lead ores are measured by the metal content ot the ore. Of course it must be remembered that the ores of this region virtually all contain certain amounts ot gold, silver, copper. lead and zinc. But, using the production of lead, it is found that at 5 cent lead only a few of the high grade mines can operate. At 6 cent lead more mines can operate and the high grade mines can turn to larger production. At 7 cent lead addi-tional marginal producers can be brought into production and the mines already in production can increase the volume of their out-put. At eight cent lead vast new reserve of low grade ores can be opened up to production. This nation is not lacking in ore reserve. Mineable ore reserves or what can be called ore reserves, however, are based upon what is paid for the metal. Mines of Utah and western United States can and will meet any emergency placed upon it by the demands of me-chanized warfare. Dime WbegmAS? 97e T OMUL. wmim AOIBA THE B5B |
