SamewQiat of a sensation has been caused in financial circles because conservative and careful Nicholas Murray Butler, bead of Columbia University, made an address on Henry George's great book, Progress and Poverty," which be wrote years ago, and which has never yet been answered, and is as sound as truth itself. That is a sign of progress. Henry George was one of the countrys great men who believed In the divine right of humanity, rather than in the divine right of property. He believed and proclaimed that the liberty of human beings should be real and actual, instead of theoretical in this wealthy country. A paragraph may illustrate his truth. Talk about abolishing slavery 1 We have not abolished slavery; we have only abolished one form of it chattel slavery. There is a deeper and more insiduous form yet berofe us to abolish, in this industrial slavery that makes a man a virtual slave while taunting and mocking him in the name of freedom. Commenting on the matter a certain writer says: "To imbue the mind with tire idea that material wealth is the source o happiness is to deceive it. What American statesmen who wouk not see a mighty smash given to our present capitalistic structure should seek to bring about is that there shall be no grount for the complaint that our system of finance and business makes it possible for a few men to concentrate a very large per cent of the wealth of the country in their hands, while a the same time it makes it impossible for millions of men an women to expect more than a mere pittance." OUR HUMAN RELATIONSHIP. We must understand that every man is our brother. We cannot afford to despise any human being, because every one is our kin. We may belong to a dub, a church, a lodge, a party or a family, and call our fellow members brothers, but there is something we belonged to before any of these and which has first claim upon us the human race. Every man, no matter how poor or how rich, is entitled to our assistance in procuring for him justice and freedom and happiness. Every child has a right to our kindness and support. Every criminal id unfortunate is entitled to our sympathy. Every struggling human being has a right to our helping hand. There are no aliens, foreigners or enemies. We can have no good thought that we do not share with our fellows. Whatever virtue, ideal, vision, love or power we have, our fellows must, to a degree, participate in. We can have no real liberty until every man has the right and liberty to live his owu Efe as he pleases. Every goodness uplifts us; every vice inflicts us. To love our friend's is instinct; to love our dime is intelligence, but to love every man is true religion. If it dtoelb not in our hearts we need not hang any signs on the men will know us. outside, SOON PEOPLE WILL RULE. In the past twenty years the public debt of states and minor political subdivisions is said to have increased fourfold. The money necessary to pay the interest and principal on that indebtedness must be raised by taxes. The bonds were issued when money was plentiful (to loan) and prices high. The interest and principal wifi be paid with dollars hard to collect and worth more than the dollar spent for public improvements. By manipulating prices thepowers that be double and treble their profits. They also further concentrate the real wealth of the country in the hands of fewer and fewer people through foreclosures on homes and farms. When the truth dawns on the people of the country they wifi take charge of the political machinery of both parties, elect men to office pledged to a platform of amending the constitution of the United States so as to permit congress to control industry and agriculture in the interests of the people and eliminate the domination of the ahylocks now taking not only their pound of flesh but getting ready to pick the bones clean. INSPIRING SIGHT. It was indeed an inspiring sight to the editor to walk through' the new headquarters on the opening day, and the visit to the different departments on the two floors of the spacious building gave a thrill that one does not often experience. financial lights of the city and country should The have had the privilege of looking in upon the scene, especially the stores. Here before their eyes they might have seen the so-call- ed major financial and economic problems solved and human relations lifted to higher levels. The age-ol- d idea has persisted that it cant he done. But here it is being done in a way that proves a happy solution. For more than a quarter of a century the writer has been dreaming of, writing and speaking about some such an ideal and has longed and yearned for its coming, with faith that some day it would be brought about. It is the plan, the system, in its beginnings, for which the world has been waiting and for which struggling humanity has been praying and hoping. So we fling to the wtorid the news that In our ever enlarging circle the people are being lifted out of distress and bondage and beginning to enjoy a peace and a freedom they have never known. Too much good cannot be said of N. D. A. THE SOMETHING UNKNOWN. A local editor, speaking of the oratorical efforts of political leaders, says: "There is an absence of something for which nungry humanity is waiting." What is that something? Everywhere the common people congregate they yearn and listen for something to fall from the lips of leaders that is different to the old buncombe, something that will feed their hungry souls, something that will inspire them to go on through tribulation, something that wifi satisfy the yearnings of the heart; and above all, something that will guarantee an equitable distribution of the countrys wealth ana opportunity. They have come to believe that it is little short of criminal to keep the masses in poverty where they give every energy of their lives t eke out a bare existence, and on the other hand a privileged few wallow in the piled up wealth of the country. TO PROTECT THE WEAK. Governments were instituted to protect the weak from the strong. We have almost reversed the policy in these good days. Government is of, for and by tire strong, and by the strong is meant those who have acquired large interests and great wealth. These have the whole protection and concern of the government. This is unjust, and it is an immutable law that a government -- -l Whole-Whe- at e ATO THEES J. J. J. I i J W . ELECTRICIANS THE OLD FASHIONED MOTHER. , (From Five Minute Inspirations by the Editor.)
