Show If BAT-ICREEK President Eisenhower's full support of the Upper Colorado storage project, which includes construction of the $176 million Echo Park Dam, and the $331 million Central Utah Project, is welcome news indeed. Coming at a time when industrial layoffs are becoming nationally commonplace, the early approval by Congress of this universally beneficial enterprise enter-prise is paramount. The expenditure of $507 million seems at first glance to be a lot of money; but in these times when politicians toss billions of dollars about, without the flicker of an eyelash, this modest expenditure is a relative pittance. Best of all, the final result will provide a facility, the economic value of which will increase as time goes on. Even during the process of construction, the money expended for wages and materials, will do much to mitigate the evils of the impending recession. Of course the proposal will have oppositiaon. Eastern and Central Congressmen often display little interest or sympathy in the development devel-opment of the West. This is just human nature. Projects which do not benefit politicians personally in their bid for popularity or their scramble for re-election, are often opposed as a matter of selfish indifference. in-difference. All of the people of Utah, and especially those who live in the central part of the State, are fortunate for-tunate in having the support of the President and Agriculture Sec-reaary Sec-reaary Ezra Taft Benson, in their fight for Congressional approval of this vital project. Water is the life-blood of the arid West. The way things stand now, we have about reached our maximum industrial in-dustrial and agricultural growth, unless new sources of water are developed and utilized. Money intelligently expended for things of lasting human benefit bene-fit is never wasted. It is only the dollars that are spent in war, waste, corruption, and ignorance, that really go down the drain. So long 'til Friday. |
