I mean really, can't we all just love each other for who we are inside? Why do we have to take standardized stan-dardized tests to tell us how smart we are, when it's what's inside that counts? Wouldn't the world be great - if we could all sing in perfect per-fect harmony and just drink a Red Bull? All the kids in the Perfect Score have their reasons for taking the SAT (Stan-darized (Stan-darized Aptitude Test -although what SAT actually stands for comes out in the movie). However they somehow some-how get this crazy idea that stealing the test is the answer to their problems. Now, a movie made by MTV has to be filled with morals and high standards, right? Oh you betcha! The movie flatly rejects drug use (although its funniest fun-niest character is a stoner), alcohol consumption and smoking. Not bad. And while I know you're all saying, say-ing, "But the kids are all little lit-tle thieves." Don't get ahead of yourselves. It is for a good cause, like little selfish robin hoods. And isn't it the intention that matters, especially if they all learn to love and appreciate one another? The Brunch Club, as I like to call them, makes their plans to steal the test, carry them out, and learn a valuable lesson in the process. They all make it to the test, with the answers, and then... naw, I'm not going to tell you what they do with their perfect score. This movie will resonate the most with folks who have recently gone through the trials of high school and all the frosting that goes along with that sweet institution, insti-tution, or with those, like myself, who still find themselves them-selves wandering the high schools halls in their mind, looking for a jock to beat them up. The lingo is a bit harsh, but other than that it's silly fun. The Perfect Score is a coming-of-age drama that speaks to the high school student in us all. While it probably isn't worth more than two stars, I see stars when I see Scarlett Johansson. Johans-son. This movie is worth seeing at full price if you have an, some say unhealthy, I say dedicated, attraction to Scarlett Johansson (Scarlet, if you read this, please return my calls). If you haven't begun seeing the world through Scarlett colored glasses then it's worth seeing at the matinee. You Got Served Rating: 1 star Wow! Break dancin' is off the hook yo! This piece is slammin'. Slamming us around the theater like we're some kind of idiot rag dolls. This movie is a great instructional piece on break dancing. It had me jerking in my seat from all the bad acting and terrible dialogue; dia-logue; by the end I was in physical pain. The movie begins with Elgin, Marques Houston of IMX, and David, Omari "Omarion, Grandberry of B2K, as best of friends; street dancers who are leaders lead-ers of the uncontested champions in town. They are beset by every kind of problem from the start of the film; this is meant to heighten the tension, but it only leads us to the conclusion conclu-sion far in advance of the ending, that everything will end up all right. The two friends suffer through family fami-ly disagreements, having to submit to the local drug dealer (who seems to be a Black Don Corleon) in order to get the cash to compete in the street duels, and a grandmother who is so over the top she just might be real. The two are separated by every possible bone-headed catastrophe, stacked one on top of the other, that could possibly be thought up, only to lead us to the final, painfully obvious, reunion at the end where all sins are forgiven and all friendships friend-ships renewed. Worst of all is Steve Harvey, Har-vey, an incredibly funny and talented man, who somehow some-how got the job of saying something like, "We'll handle han-dle this the way we do on the street." But he conies off as convincingly as if the cast of Friends were saying the lines. Imagine Courtney Cox saying, "Just keepin' it real wich ya." And you've pretty much got the idea. This movie is a drama that could have been a great story about dealing with a tough life in creative and non-violent ways. The dancing in the movie is its only redeeming quality, regardless of the chonDv editing-, it is still amazing to watch some of the world's greatest dancers really show their style. Girl With a Pearl Earring Rating: 3 stars Scarlett Johansson is an extraordinary actress with tendencies to the darker, quieter pieces that other actresses her age will only take 15 years from now. She is persuasively mysterious, with an aura of the classic beauty. She is a rarity amongst other 19-year-old actresses, not just in looks, but in talent tal-ent as well. For the second time in the last six months Ms. Johansson has shown her true quality with Girl With a Pearl Earring, a simple sim-ple tale of love, lust and seeing see-ing things for the first time. This story, based upon the best-selling book by the same name, centers on the famous painting by Ver-meer Ver-meer of the unknown girl, who simultaneously looks impressionable, curious and worn, staring back at us with a plainly beautiful face, decorated simply by a single pearl earring. Griet, played with a passionate pas-sionate undercurrent by Scarlett Johansson, is a young girl, forced to live among a family whose beliefs are different from her own. The master of the house is Vermeer, a masterful master-ful painter, intrigued by his environment, but bound to the world by his financial troubles; his lecherous patron is his only protection against poverty. Griet comes into this world, bringing light and understanding under-standing to Ycrmeer's life, as she finds direction in her own. Girl With a Pearl Earring is a fascinating piece of cinema, cin-ema, slow and thoughtfully paced as the curious tendencies ten-dencies of a young girl pull the story forward. The themes are broad and easily-read; easily-read; the acting is simple and beautiful, often relying on silence rather than overt action or messy dialogue. Girl With a Pearl Earring is an engaging movie, simple and eloquent, and worth seeing for full price if you like slow-paced, period love pieces. Now if Scarlett would only call me.
