Despite the fact that many had picked the Tigers to finish last in the tough Region 7 standings, Coach Randy McAllister warned against the dangerous Orem team. McAllister's fears came true as the Tigers slowed the game down and limited the Viking's scoring chances by keeping the ball on their own end of the court as much as possible. The same strategy was used frequently frequent-ly last year by Pleasant Grove. While the Vikings had been rolling in their previous previ-ous two games, Orem cut Pleasant Grove's average points per quarter in half and kept the score low. At the end of one period of play, Pleasant Grove held a slim 10-7 advantage. Chad Evan's four points led all Vikings. Things got really tough for the Vikings in the second sec-ond quarter when Pleasant Grove managed just four points, all of which were scored by Evans. Meanwhile Mean-while Orem scored eight points in the quarter to take a 15-14 halftime advantage. The halftime score reflected more of a first quarter score than a typical halftime score. Pleasant Grove rebounded rebound-ed in the third quarter with a balanced scoring attack that included three-point buckets from Cody Bilbro and Chad Evans. Bilbro's points came from beyond the arc while Evans completed com-pleted a three-point play thanks to a basket and foul. After outscoring Orem 14-7 during the third period, peri-od, the Vikings held the biggest lead of the game at 28-22. The Tigers battled back in the fourth quarter to pull within one point at 30-29 with six minutes remaining in the game. Jay Helquist's three-point basket increased the lead to four but Orem again fought back. The Tigers managed to tie the score at 39 with only 29 seconds remaining in the game. After the Vikings missed their opportunity to win the contest, Orem ran the clock down to three seconds sec-onds before hitting the game-winning jump shot from near the foul line. For Pleasant Grove, Jay Helquist and his five points led all Vikings in the fourth quarter, while Evans was the only one to score in double dou-ble figures for Pleasant Grove with 14. The game was much like the contest against American Ameri-can Fork, except this time Pleasant Grove came out on the short end of the score. With the loss, the Vikings find themselves with a one-game one-game disadvantage with only seven region contests remaining on the schedule. Tomorrow night Pleasant Grove travels back to Orem, this time to play against Timpanogos High School. The T-Wolves were projected project-ed near the top of the region race with the Vikings. Both teams will use the game to position themselves for one of the top three spots in the region race that will claim a playoff berth. Next week the region schedule continues with a Tuesday home game against Mountain View and the rematch between Orem and Pleasant Grove on Friday.
