Oi' Utah's economy looks positive According to the Winter 2004 issue of Zions Bank's Insight - Economic News of Utah and the Nation released today, Utah's economic eco-nomic outlook is the most promising in four years. "Utah economic growth has finally turned positive, a development we expect to pick up speed during 2004," said Jeff Thredgold, economic eco-nomic consultant to Zions Bank and author of Insight. "While projected growth in the coming year won't rival the boom period of the mid-1990s, mid-1990s, we are moving in the right direction." The quarterly Insight publication features updates on current and projected pro-jected economic and financial finan-cial developments for the Utah Symphony and Opera will perform this evening in DeJong Concert Hall atBYU with guest cellist Utah Symphony and Opera heats up the New Year with cellist Shauna Rolston in the "Dvorak Cello Concerto," Jan. 8 at 7:30 p.m. in BYU's DeJong Concert Hall and Jan. 9 at 8 p.m. and Jan. 10 at 2 p.m. in Abravanel Hall. This dynamic artist first appeared with Utah Symphony Sym-phony in 2002 to fill in for an ill Natalia Gutman. Any disappointment over the last-minute switch quickly turned to amazement when Rolston took the stage to perform Sait-Saens' Cello Concerto. Rolston made her professional profes-sional debut at Town Hall in New York City at the age of 16. Since then, she has appeared in recital and concerto con-certo engagements around the world, including London, Lon-don, Paris, Copenhagen, Budapest, Rome, Amsterdam, Amster-dam, Tokyo, Seoul, Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Sao Paulo, Prague, Montreal, Saint Louis, Denver and San Diego. In addition to her prolific performing career, Rolston is much in demand as a master class instructor. She currently serves as Professor Profes-sor of Music and co-head of the string department at the University of Toronto, and co-director of the summer sum-mer music programs at the Banff Centre for the Arts. In 2003, Utah Symphony & Opera commissioned Elias to compose a concerto grosso for the current sea Firm to present free supplement seminar The Good Earth Natural Natur-al Foods store will present a free seminar on "Effective "Effec-tive Supplement Selection." The Winter 2004 issue also examines the so-called so-called "misery index" and its measure of American consumer economic well-being. well-being. Following are a few highlights from the "Utah Economic Outlook" section of the Winter 2004 issue: The most recent Utah employment data showed a rise of 6,700 net new jobs over the most recent 12-month 12-month period. This was the first meaningful rise in year-over-year employment in nearly three years. We are projecting a rise of 15,000 to 18,000 net new jobs (up roughly 1.5 percent) per-cent) in Utah during 2004. While not all that impres son's Connoisseur Series. The piece, with a group of soloists rather than a single instrument, was written to match the individual personalities per-sonalities of Utah Symphony Sympho-ny musicians. In a recent conversation with Utah Symphony and Opera's Tempo, Elias explained his inspirations for this piece. "Listening to a recording of Brahms' Third Symphony last spring," says Elias, "my son Jake asked, Why don't composers write melodies like that anymore?' Later that spring my daughter, Kate, and I took a crosscountry cross-country trip to Tanglewood. Listening to a CD of Corelli Concerto grossi in an effort to survive driving through Kansas, Kate remarked upon his compositional genius, in particular the antiphonal effects of alternation alter-nation between the concer-tato concer-tato (solo) and ripieno (tutti) strings. So you have my two children to thank, or blame, for whatever reactions reac-tions you may have to my concerto! "Also deserving of thanks are Keith Lockhart and Anne Ewers for their enthusiasm enthu-siasm and support for my work. Keith reminded me, over a beer at the Red Rock Brewery, that I had some time ago expressed interest in writing a concerto grosso in which I would perform as soloist. That's what beer can do sometimes. "The work is composed in pany's Orem store. The other is 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 14 at the Provo store. Those who wish to attend should call to reserve their free seating. The Orem phone number is 765-1616; Provo's number is 375-7444. A Loan Call Today! 756-2990 sive when compared to average net annual gains of 35,300 new jobs during the 1990s and the gain of 29,000 jobs in 2000, the projected pro-jected rise would be the best in four years. The state's unemployment unemploy-ment rate has also reflected an improving labor market. Utah's unemployment rate averaged 4.8 percent in recent months, and 5.2 percent per-cent during 2003's first 11 months. By comparison, the state's jobless rate averaged 6.1 percent in 2002, the highest level since 1987. Utah will continue to benefit from much stronger U.S. economic growth now underway. Various projections projec-tions see the U.S. economy growing between 3.8 per the spirit, and for the most part, the form, of the Italian Baroque concerto grosso arguably the most vibrant and resilient of any form in classical music history but additionally draws upon all of our Western music tradition." Pianist Horacio Gutierrez Gutier-rez was born in Cuba and appeared as guest soloist with the Havana Symphony at the age of 11. He went on to graduate from Julliard and he made his professional profession-al debut in 1970 with Zubin Mehta and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Since then, he has appeared regularly with the world's greatest orchestras and on major recital series.
