Friday afternoon Pleasant Plea-sant Grove traveled to American Fork to take on a young and struggling Caveman team. .Apparently the Vikings took the Cavemen lightly because Pleasant Grove allowed American Fork six quick runs before the Vikings realized they would need to play to beat this team. Facing a 6-0 deficit, Pleasant Grove began to show the caliber of baseball that is expected of this year's team. As quickly as the Cavemen had built the comfortable lead, Pleasant Grove erased the lead. Not only did the Vikings come up with impressive offense to even the score, they also showed signs of greatness in the field. A fourth inning play by first baseman Russ Wall killed an American Fork rally. With players on base, the Cavemen busted a hard shot up the first base line. T.J. Nelson was also impressive on the mound as he took over the Pleasant Grove pitching duties after the Vikings had fallen behind. To Nelson's credit the Cavemen never scored again. The Pleasant Grove bats also began producing big plays. Solid hits from Jaxon Karren, Kory Drew, Seth Iorg among others helped the Vikings build a 14-6 lead heading into the fifth inning. With the game already nearing the three hour mark, Pleasant Grove hoped to finish off the Cavemen in the fifth inning by way of the 10-run rule. But only one more run could be managed and both teams were forced to play until near dark. Despite the long game, the victory was a solid step towards consistent baseball that will be needed this week as the region schedule continues. This afternoon Pleasant Grove will return home for a 3:30 battle with Springville. The Dons will be an important stepping stone for the Vikings as Pleasant Grove hopes to establish its consistency. Friday afternoon the Vikings will again host a region battle, this time against the Payson Lions. This week's games mark the end of the 3:30 game time. Due to Daylight Savings Time this coniing weekend, all region varsity games will be able to start at 4 p.m. after this week. Pleasant Grove will visit Lone Peak on Tuesday. Softball heats 3 in a row By Dean Von Memmott ; Sports Correspondent The Pleasant Grove 5kings posted three sjraight wins last week. I On March 21, they outlasted out-lasted Timpview 2-0. Thursday' saw the 'Vikings shut out the Granite farmers 13-0. Pleasant drove finished out the week with a 6-2 win over Lone Ifcak on Friday. J Bringing a 3-0 league record, Timpview seemed to be a heavy favorite. Pitcher Jenny Scoville didn't let the TJiunderbirds' record intim-iflate intim-iflate her as she showed on tile mound who was going tp be the boss of the game. J "Jenny pitched well for ik," said Viking coach Jeff Wilson. "She was hitting the corners and reading the batters well." She gave up only two hits during the course of the day as she fanned eight batters. Timpview's pitcher, Briana Gourdin, proved to be as difficult to hit against. Pleasant Grove made only four hits against her during the afternoon. The first Viking hit occurred in the bottom of the first when Rachel Hartgrove doubled on two outs. As soon as Hartgrove stole third, she saw Gourdin strike out C.C. Francom. In the second inning, Rachel Sheets and Kirsten Thomas each hit a single for Timpview. However, a strong Viking defense kept. the Thunderbirds from cap italizing. . The game stayed scoreless score-less until the bottom of the fourth when Jenni Thurston slugged an in-the-park homer. Teammate Whitnie Winger hit an in-the-park homer for herself in the sixth, accounting for all the game's scoring. Against Granite, Thurston hit a three-run homer that helped the Vikings win in five innings. Pleasant Grove's seven-run rally in the second doomed the Farmers' cause. In the Lone Peak game, Scoville retired seven Knight hitters and went 3-4 at the plate. The Vikings visit Provo tomorrow and host Payson Tuesday. 15 16 'St ! 4 IMP ?lkin9 Amber Hilton slides home to score on a passed ball during Friday's contest. Preseason ends with split results Pleasant Grove closed out the preseason baseball schedule with a 10-0 victory over Olympus on March 13 and a 7-1 loss to reigning 5A state champion Taylorsville 7-1 on March 15. The preseason was a tale of two teams as the Vikings played extremely well at home and struggled offensively on the road. Despite their preseason record, the consensus among those close to high school baseball is that Pleasant Grove will challenge chal-lenge for the state championship. champi-onship. Only the Lone Peak Knights are currently ranked higher in the Deseret News 4A baseball poll. It is also believed that Spanish Fork or Provo could also challenge the Vikings and Knights for not only the state title but also the Region Six title. Against Olympus, Corey Fralick continued his impressive pitching as he threw four solid innings allowing just one hit. T.J. Nelson finished off the Titans in the fifth inning, also giving up just one hit. Offensively the Vikings got seven hits against an Olympus team that is very inexperienced. That inexperience inex-perience resulted in a variety vari-ety of errors that Pleasant Grove took advantage of in coming up with the 10- run victory after just five innings. Taylorsville showed that they had too much offense for Pleasant Grove as the Vikings gave up six runs in the first, three innings. Once the Vikings figured out the Taylorsville batters, only one run was given up in the final three innings. But once the Pleasant Grove pitchers had cooled off the Taylorsville bats, the Viking offense was in a hole too deep to escape. Pleasant Grove managed just, five hits in seven innings of play. i 1 r. i" ""vn 'yf,''''wwvmxwi i ;SVUe f CoodX i . v v - v i ,mi I Throuqh April 7th ) I T k ' 1 Jom Utah l V'--kI I J Valley's Finest !
