Hepatitis A is a serious illness that is common within Utah's communities. communi-ties. Those who eat out, travel, handle food or work with children have an even greater need to be vaccinated vacci-nated against the infection. infec-tion. The Hepatitis A virus is spread primarily by contaminated, con-taminated, food and unwashed hands. The virus can induce liver inflammation inflamma-tion which causes stomach pains, diarrhea, jaundice (yellow skin), and flu-like symptoms! The illness can continue ifor months and cost overj $2,500 in lost wages. There is no treatment treat-ment for jthe Hepatitis A illness, making the need for protection of immunization immuniza-tion mor6 important. Two shots of ;the Hepatitis A vaccine proximately six months apart are required for maximum protection. The first shot alone, how ever, gives approximately 95 percent protection against the virus.
