Coach Jon Hoover decided decid-ed the team needed a spark so he made an announcement announce-ment to his team that many wondered about but no one figured would come until the end of the season. After 30 years as the Viking baseball coach, Hoover announced that this season would be his last. The announcement may have sparked his team to dig a little deeper for a region victory. That win came in extra innings Monday afternoon as Pleasant Grove battled back from a 2-0 deficit to claim a 3-2 victory over Lone Peak and bookend four straight region losses. Tyson Mehlhoff pitched another solid game as he went the distance, but this time the offense came up with enough hits to outscore the opponent. Lone Peak jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. The lone Knight run appeared to be all Lone Peak would need to win the game due to the Viking inability to score. Until the fifth inning, Pleasant Grove had stranded strand-ed six baserunners without managing to bring anyone across home plate. That was until Alex Iorg reached base and Jason Gray came up with a big single that drove in the Iorg run. Still, the Vikings left runners run-ners in scoring position as the top half of the fifth ended with Pleasant Grove still trailing 2-1. With only three outs to spare in the top of the seventh sev-enth inning, Ryan Davis went a long way toward keeping the Vikings alive as his leadoff double gave Pleasant Grove new hope. Robby Weber tied the game with one out as his single drove home Davis and put the pressure on Lone Peak to break the tie before extra innings. Mehlhoff did his part in RG. softball suffers two more losses By Dean Von Memmott Sports Correspondent The Pleasant Grove soft-ball soft-ball team continued to struggle last week. At home April &, they suffered the program's first-ever loss to Lone Peak 11-4. The next day in Roosevelt, Union defeated Pleasant Grove 7-1. In the first five innings of the game against the Knights, everything was looking up for the Vikings. Brittany Edlefsen's triple and home run helped secure a3-2 lead. Viking coach Jeff Wilson said, The sixth inning was where we fell apart. We gave up eight runs to them as we hurt ourselves with mental errors. Before that inriing, we were playing well." He also said the Vikings "lacked a lot of hustle. They were going the wrong way on throws." He added that after the game, "we talked about how it will be more important impor-tant for us to win every game from here on out, if we expect to go to State." The coach said his players play-ers performed better in the Union game, and displayed more unity than in prior contests this season. Wilson said, "They were diving for balls and came up with great catches." In the bottom of the first inning, freshman pitcher McKell Wilson didn't give up any hits, and the solo baserunner was kept stranded on base. Union kept the Vikings scoreless in the first two innings. Meanwhile, after walking on in the bottom of the second, Camille Yazzie soon stole home, and Jamie Buxton singled in two runs on two outs, improving the Cougar lead at 3-0. The Vikings threw Buxton out in a fielder's choice play at second to end the rally. The third opened with Lauren Roderick tripling into right. Edlefsen singled her in, but the Union players play-ers quickly dampened Pleasant Grove celebrations of that RBI. Tightening up their defense, the Cougars didn't let the Vikings make any more hits until Ashlie Giles cranked a fifth-inning single on two outs. Meanwhile, in the bottom bot-tom of the third, a steal home produced a fourth Cougar run. Wilson held Union scoreless score-less in the fourth, but in the fifth, the Cougars picked up two runs on four hits to conclude con-clude their tally. Though Erin Glazier produced pro-duced a seventh-inning single, sin-gle, the game ended before the Vikings could mount a strong comeback. The region schedule is set to resume Tuesday at Orem. The Vikings then visit Juan Diego the next day and Timpanogos the day after that. Varsity game time is 3:30 p.m. Q Photos by Kent Davis Pleasant Grove's Ashlie Giles gets a base hit on April 8. After a strikeout and a groundout to the shortstop, Mehlhoff got the final Lone Peak batter to fly out to right field, forcing the eighth inning. Josh Mitton came up big as the leadoff batter in the extra stanza when he nailed a shot to left field, giving him time to reach second base with no outs. Clay Hooley's hard shot to second base advanced Mitton to' third. Things then got interesting interest-ing as the Vikings loaded the bases with walks by Josh Smith and Kellen Christiansen. Later a throwing error gave Mitton a chance to score from third for the winning run with two outs. The Viking defense did what it had to do in the bottom bot-tom half of the eighth to preserve the victory and break the long winning drought. In the Timpanogos game, Viking goalie Broch DeGraff recorded his third shutout victory. To help achieve that accomplishment, accomplish-ment, Jay Ilelquist and Jacob Villasenor each scored in the first half. Jared Elton booted in a second-half goal to complete the tally. In the Mountain View game, Bruin James Jaramillo opened the afternoon's after-noon's scoring by kicking in a shot from the right corner of the Viking penalty box. A few minutes later, Tyson Firmage rebounded a shot, then kicked the ball into the net, pushing the advantage to 2-0. Bruin goalie Bryan Black held the Vikings scoreless until Ilelquist found the net on a second-half breakaway play. Pleasant Grove had three more chances to tie the game, but they couldn't get any shots past Black. The Vikings resume the region schedule as they host Orem on Wednesday.
