PG Orchestra to present 'Night of Inspirational Young Mij, The Pleasant Grove Orchestra, conducted by Sharon Ives, will present "A Night of Inspirational Young Musicians" at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, April 25, in the Pleasant Grove High School auditorium. This year's soloists are all from Pleasant Grove. This concert is sponsored by the Pleasant Grove Arts Council and is free to the public. Allison Bigelow Allison, age 13, recently won first place in the state PTA Reflections Contest for an original origi-nal piano composition about her Grandpa Bigelow flying dive bombers in World War II on the night her father was born. She has earned many awards for her original music and art work and continues to create. A student of Professor Ralph van der Beek, she placed in the USU Piano Competition and in many local events. Her Constitution Quiz Bowl team placed second in the state competition. She is the ninth of 10 children of Rob and Jill Bigelow. Erica Glenn Erica is 16 years old and a junior jun-ior at Pleasant Grove High School. She began playing the piano at age six and studies with Rexine Glenn. She has consistently consis-tently received superior ratings at piano festivals throughout the state and has been honored as a finalist in both the National Federation Fed-eration of Music Clubs Solo Festival Festi-val and BYU Piano Competition. Her first major choral work,"Pied Beauty," was performed last spring by the Utah Children's Choir. After high school, she plans to attend BYU and Julliard to study music composition. She is the daughter of James and Sharlee Glenn. Angela Bigelow Jacob Angela, 18, has soloed with the Utah Valley and American Fork Symphonies and placed first in the Utah State Fair, BYU and USU Piano Competitions, and in many local events. She toured China, Japan and Mexico giving piano concerts with her sisters and studied piano performance with Professors Gary Amano and Raph van der Beek of USU. The seventh of 10 children of Rob and Jill Bigelow, Angela enjoyed home schooling and will soon graduate from BYU in English. She married mar-ried Isaac Jacob, son of James and LaDawn Jacob, on Valentines Day in the Salt Lake Temple. Lindsey Jensen Lindsey is 15 years old and began playing the violin eight years ago. She studies with Shau-na Shau-na Davies. She has played with the Utah Valley Young Chamber Players, the Lyceum Chamber Orchestra and the Utah Valley Youth Symphony. She recently returned from new York where she performed with a group at Carnegie Hall. She is a ninth grade student at Pleasant Grove Junior High School, where she also enjoys playing the cello with the Elite Orchestra. She is the daughter of Scott and Valorie Jensen. Rebekah Willey Rebekah, age 8, started violin and viola at 12 months. Her teachers are Deborah Moench and her mother. Rebekah has soloed with the Utah Valley Symphony Sym-phony and the Young Chamber Players. She was principal violinist violin-ist and the youngest member of the National Suzuki Youth Orchestra in Minneapolis. She won first place in the Utah Viola Festival, first place in the Weber State ASTA Festival in March and honorable mention at the Utah State Fair. Rebekah is a third grader in home school and is the last of six children of Donell and Denise Willey. Lindon Elementary teams place in Knowledge Bowl By Linda Butler Two of Lindon Elementary Elemen-tary School's Knowledge Bowl teams placed in the top ten in recent district competitions. Members of the third and fourth grade team and the fifth and sixth grade team were awarded plaques as recognition of their achievement. Students displayed their mastery of historical facts covering World and U.S. History. Students needed to know not only famous people, peo-ple, places, and important dates, but definitions of history-related terms and quotes of famous people. Twenty-seven students were organized onto five teams, and were coached by volunteer parent Holly Miner. "The students came an hour before school, once a week, beginning in November," Novem-ber," said Miner. With Miner's help, students stu-dents researched a variety of historical topics and learned to work together as a team. Some of the students became specialized in certain cer-tain areas. Spencer Harbold said his specialties quotes and terms. Megan Armknecht that reading and study paid off for her. She answered some of the more difficult questions correctly. "I guessed twice and got them right," she said. Allison Meiners agreed that studying history has helped her, too. "I learned a lot about World history, U.S. history, and Utah history," she said. Butler can be contacted at lindasbutlcKojunn.com Young authors give readings at Barnes and Noble By Linda Butur Students in Christine Geisel's fourth grade class have been busy writing, illustrating, and publishing their own books. On Saturday, Satur-day, some of these Grove-crest Grove-crest Elementary students spent time reading their works at Barnes and Noble in Orem. Writing their own Ixniks is an important part of the forth grade curriculum. "We've always published the students' stories," said Geisel, "it's a culmination of their writing skills." The students are able to take all they've learned alniut word choice, sentences and paragraphs para-graphs and weave them into creative, original stories. Students' works ranged from realistic to fantasy. Titles included, "My Trip to Lagoon," "Buzz, Buzz, Snap," and "Baseball." Talyssa Anderson, author of "Falling Popcorn," enjoys writing. She's written several sever-al books and her imaginary siory anout the day it snowed popcorn was a delight.
