Show Pleasant Grove Review New Utah - Thursday, April 10, 2003 - Page Sports Baseball feam loses reg ion games io Bruins, to By Todd Veenker Sports Correspondent For the past two weeks, the Pleasant Grove baseball team has been hanging around that gray area that separates wins and losses. Despite playing well enough to win against Mountain View and Orem, the Vikings stayed too long on the darker side of gray to pull out the victories. " A 1-0 loss to the Bruins April 4 and a 6-3 defeat at the hands of the Tigers Tuesday afternoon could easily have been Viking wins were it not for two individual plays in both games- . TT. Against Mountain View, Pleasant Grove played nearly perfectly on the defensive side, committing just one error. Tyson Mehlhoff pitched a complete game, allowing only three hits on the afternoon. But a fifth-inning fifth-inning double dou-ble followed by a one-out single drove in the winning win-ning run for the Bruins. Prior to that five-batter five-batter inning by Mountain View, Mehlhoff had retired 12 straight with the Photos by Todd Veenker hep 0f fois Pitcher Ryan Davis looks to make a pickoff teammates, move to first against Timpanogos April 1 . Mean- 1 s while, the Vikings were struggling to take advantage advan-tage of their opportunities. Pleasant Grove stranded baserunners each and every time they came to the plate, 12 total in the contest. In the sixth inning, Ryan Davis reached third base following a throwing error at second with just one out, but Pleasant Grove was unable to come up with a hard enough hit to drive in the tying run. The result was an extremely hard pill to swallow for a Viking team that played so well but came up on the short end of a great game. At Orem Tuesday, the game got started on the right foot. Four singles in the top of the first inning allowed the Vikings to own a 2-0 lead. Travis Lowder, Jason Gray, Josh Mitton and Tyson Mehlhoff each connected con-nected with the ball in the inning and Lowder and Gray crossed the plate for the quick start. However, Orem got its act together defensively following fol-lowing the tough beginning and thereafter limited the Pleasant Grove offense to a lone base runner in the second sec-ond inning. Pleasant Grove's Ryan Davis pitched an impressive four innings of baseball before tiring in the fourth. Had it not been for a pair of miscues in the fifth inning, Davis might have stayed in the game and the Vikings might not have lost their lead. Orem's six runs in the fifth came following a walk and a bad throw that broke open the flood gates for the Tigers. The Vikings still had chances to get themselves back in the game. In the seventh inning, Pleasant Grove started the inning with a single from Kellen Christiansen, who would later score. However, strikeouts strike-outs with the bases loaded ended the chances of a Viking comeback.
