' ' J"e. and Personally I think if this r T?ome to( used this will be the most n 10 tfgnificarit educational s said the tform in 50 years," Cox eady id. enviro. During the four years he y or the been working on the -ate tn ru, i cm: Vio Viae ' rlnna and found that aiiv times a larger district Wm be more expensive than ether coe "smaller districts, work in j "VvTiat happens when you 5 rde a Jive a larger district, is you train five d 'up promising parts of ldn't help ye "district that are not ice betwee;-owing as much as the he traffic jjarts' that are," Cox said, m 1-15. "j:rou 'have to promise them ng forwar;mething to buy 'their ' it," hesaidptfes". ' much com s sets UP a process 'ails Greetrat if voters want to, they w there T nr:'split a school district, 3imuterrlt" it js not necessarily lume of coc-sy- They need 15 percent1 frustrates L e vters voting for it, rhen thevV'ch is higher than the' cent, or they can petition their county commission. If the county commission was petitioned successfully, the commissioners would in turn form a committee t6 study the surrounding issues and take input from lr those interested. When the 'study was done, the committee com-mittee would submit its findings and the commission commis-sion would have a public hearing, then it could be put on the ballot. ! If a majority of voters in each proposed division approve having a new district,1' dis-trict,1' then a new district could be formed. ' ; "If you examine one proposal pro-posal -that is being talked about but there is splitting of Alpine School District into 1 three districts," Cox said. ' ' ' ' The11 district has more 1 than 47,000 students. One suggested division, he has heard 'about, is Orem, American Fork with Lin-don, Lin-don, Pleasant Grove, Highland, High-land, Cedar Hills and Alpine, and Lehi with its outlying towns and cities. Each division would have to have a minimum of 5,000 students in it. The process, however, doesn't just end with a voter approval and involved three years of preparation. "If this is used, and it is likely it will be used it once or twice, and it ends up being a positive thing, I believe it will be used all along the Wasatch Front and then nationwide," Cox said. "There are drives to do this in many other places. They've been trying to break up the Los Angeles School District for 30 years.. .They've been trying to split the Las Vegas School District as well." On his Web site, www.smallerschools.com, Cox posts research that shows nationwide the bigger big-ger districts usually end up having bigger schools and higher costs more per pupil. "That is the biggest problem prob-lem we have in education in the country today is the district dis-trict becomes so big they don't work well," Cox said. "Of course if the citizens are happy but then there would be no reason to use it." The recently released Young -Women General President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Margaret Nadauld along with her husband Stephen, will speak at American Heritage School in American Fork Friday, March 21, at 7:30 p.m. The school is located at 736 N. 1100 East. Their topic will be "That Our Children May Know To What Source They May Look." The Nadaulds are the parents of seven sons and enjoy 10 grandchildren.
