Show Happy Birthday Pleasant Grove We don't suppose any original settlers are still around to remind us, but this week is the 131st birthday of Pleasant Grove. The Daughters of the Pioneers and Grovecrest School under the direction of Principal Walt Reimschussel are all celebrating this event. In the autumn of 1850, Brigham Young sent a small group of LDS pioneers to settle this community. There were no children among them until a baby was born a little later. They spent some time living in their wagon beds, with the wheels removed, in the "Grove" of trees located near where the Grove Ward stands now. Grove Creek meandered down through that area, too, providing water for the newcomers. After the skirmish with the Indians near the mouth of what is now called Battlecreek Canyon, the community was called Battlecreek. It actually wasn't called Pleasant Grove until sometime later when the name appeared ap-peared on some LDS church records. The fort was constructed thereafter providing a measure of safety for the small community. Many people lived in dugouts before cabins or homes could be built. Many, many Pleasant Grove natives claim lineage back to the original settlers. They were a hardy bunch and deserve recognition on this birthday anniversary. From those humble beginnings the town has grown to a thriving community com-munity of over 10,000 souls, a far cry from the handful, about 12, who came here in that September, 131 years ago. |
