National Family Week Citizens Reflect Upon Family Unit Blessings President Carter's proclamation designating National Family Week encouraged citizens to observe the week with appropriate ceremonies and activities in their homes and communities. In conjunction with Utah Valley Family Month, under the sponsorship of the Utah Valley Public Communications Council of the LDS Church, area residents are being encouraged to reflect upon their blessings as a family unit. Gov. Scott Matheson, the entire Utah congressional delegation and four Utah Valley mayors have released statements endorsing the concept of National Family Week and Utah Valley Family Month now underway. un-derway. Governor Matheson said. "In todays increasingly complex world it is important to maintain the values and continuity of family life. We salute all families as we focus attention at-tention this month on opportunities to restore their strength and help them meet the challenges of contemporary contem-porary society." Matheson also encouraged en-couraged all Utahns to observe the week with appropriate thoughts and actions. Senator Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, also spoke in favor of setting aside time to honor families. "Not only for November, Novem-ber, but for always, may we endeavor to strengthen our families and thus strengthen future generations," Hatch Hat-ch said. Congressman Gunn McKay, Democrat from Utah's 1st Congressional District, applauded Utah Valley's Family Month and National Family Week as a positive effort at sustaining and improving the most basic resource, the family. In addition to state and national support, several valley mayors have added their endorsement. Orem City Mayor James E. Mangum summed up the messages of several mayors when he said, "We join with all the residents of this community in the encouragement of family unity and better family relations." |
