Main , rT"" ' ; Pleasant Kt I Grove Csl 785-3221 David Faux, Pharmacist Medicines Produced By Bacteria Many helpful medicines are extracted from plants (digoxin from foxglove, penicillin from certain molds) and animals (insulin and some immunization materials from domesticated animals). The human body has also served as a source of some medicines. Yet, some medicines can be extracted from the body only at death, and then in minute quantities. And few individuals are willing to allow their bodies to serve as medicine sources. These factors have limited the widespread availability of materials such as human growth hormone, a material required to correct growth problems in hormone deficient children. Protein materials that are exact replicas of those which are produced by the human body can now be produced through genetic engineering. In this complicated process, bacteria are modified (through alterations in DNA) so that they produce the desired materials in vast quantities. Since the earyl 1980 s, human insulin has been produced via this process. Other materials that these "trained bacteria" can manufacture include the cancer-fighters interleukin-2 and interferon, growth hormone and tissue plasminogen activator, an enzyme that holds promise in treating blood clots.
