Show unfair to ask citizens to passi pass by their vote on scientific pro problems beems by CIRCUIT JUDGE ROBERT M TOMS detroit 1113 modern tendency toward democracy is a vicious perversion of T THE our representative form of government I 1 am not referring to we the political pofi parties in speaking of bf the afie democratic and lican forms of government in a democracy the people themselves elect their own officers and pass their laws as they did in the town meetings in new england ye years arsaga ago in a republic the government is 13 by pro proxy axy in detroit we are ge getting it n g away from the republican form farm of government submit I 1 propositions to the people for vote ern ment when we important in and what fools the ills people have made of themselves yes I 1 A recent electa election demonstrated the folly of asking the voter foter the tha man of the lathe orthe or the grocery counter to vote on an issue issue which should be decided by scientific and economic economic experts at that election the ahe rapid tran transit t proposition proved to be a p popular no issue consequently the voters rejected the two other propositions on the ballot which had nothing to do with the eapen expenditure deture of money the people vote in cycles eight or ten years ago we had c yes epidemic among voters after the people got stuck on a couple of propositions they began to vote no and they are still voting no regardless of the merits of the issue A few years ago detroit voters decided they wanted street car 1 tracks on the belle isle bridge they voted voled yes ye without taking baking engineering problems into info consideration the tracks iracks were laid and are there today IL a monument of public legislation they go nowhere and not a wheel has haa been turned but thousands of dollars were wasted it is not fair to the people to submit such matters to them the city ty should not expect the public to io make decisions that can only be reached by men scientifically informed this government either federal or municipal was never ih intended tended to be democratic to call on the people to pass their own laws and ordinances is a vicious perversion of republicanism lican ism |
