Mayor Issues Proclamation, Urging the .people of Payson to join in tho observance of tho day, Mayor J. C. Ellsworth has issued , iy the following proclamation: By the terms of a proelamati bv the piesident of the United Stat December 21, 1920, has been design-efor the holding of services throve out the nation in commemoration d of In commemoration of Proposed by City Fathers to Install Iron Posts, Mounted With Brilliant Lights, at Frequent Intervals on Main Street, Utah Avenue, First North and First South Street. Ar Before the advent of spring, if the city council received the .upjor of the business men of the city, Payson, in its business district, will be one of the best lighted cities in the state. It is proposed to place about sixty-fou- r iron posts, known ns the union metal standards, on Main street between First North and First South street, and on Utah each suhmounted by one or' two be powerful lamps, the posts to placed at brief intervals on each side of the streets mentioned. The subject was introduced at W regular meeting of the city council, last Monday night by Mayor J. C. Ellsworth, and aftor a thorough discussion it was proposed to place the maltter before the property owners at an early date. The cost of the polos, according to estimates will ,be about $35 each, with the cost ol instalation extra. It is proposed to assess the cost against the p.-perty on the blocks benefitted, and for this purpose it will be necessary to create a lighting district, similar to any other special improvement district. It is estimated that the total cost to the property owners will not exceed $2 per front foot, the- - maintenance of the lighting system, of course, to be borne by the eity. It is not believed that the propdeosition will meet with any termined oppositon on the part of the property "owners, who will nt owce realize that there is no greater evidence of the progress of n That city than well lighted streets. the present street lighting system, especially in the business center, is inadequate to the times only needs the comparison to be made between Payson and other cities, Richfield, for instance, which has just installed a street lighting system similar to o that 3- - proposed for Pujyson. That business' streets of Payson arc inadequately lighted there is no dis pute. of itnstalaltion can . be y The cost it is believed, by payments covering a period of years, so that no hardship will result to any proThe benefit, it is perty owner.' conceded will more than warrant the outlay. The population . of Payson steadily is growing and business is expanding. Well lighted streets are a necessit and an outward evidence . that fhi people believe in their own town.
