UTAH, APRIL 1, DEFECT ate, answered the Republicans because the president of the senate was & The two houses, said Republican. the Democrats, because one of the houses was Democratic. Compromise was necessary to save the government from chaos and the Five Minute Chats on Our Presidents By JAMES MORGAN (Copyright, 1920, by James Morgan.) ONLY DISPUTED ELECTION O: 1822 Oct 2, birth of Rutherford B. Hayes at Delaware, O. 1852 Married Lucy Ware Webb. 1861 Major in Ohio Volunteers. 1864 1865-6- 7 1867-7- 1 1876 1877 Brigadier General. Member of Congress. Governor of Ohio. June 15, nominated for President by Republican National Convention at Cincinnati. Jan. 30, electoral commission appointed March 2, Hayes declared elected. March 5, inaugurated 19th President, aged 54. tidal wave which swept down Republicans in the congressional elections of 1S74 still was running so strongly in the campaign of 1876 that Rutherford B. Ilayes himself never was confident of his success. Nor was the country surprised to read in the headlines the morning after election that Tilden, the Democratic candidate, had won the race. The Republican national headquarters in New York city shut up shop early election night, and the Republican campaign mnnagers went to bed resigned to defeat. Tilden was elected on the face of the returns, with 203 electoral votes to 106 for Ilayes, and had also a plurality of 250,000 in the popular vote. His election indeed rested on the same basis as Clevelands in 1884 and Wilsons In 1916. But in 1876 the Republicans had not yet acquiesced in the suppression of the negro vote in the South. And if the negroes had not been persuaded" by various means Dom going to ,the polls, Tilden could not have been elected. Both the Republicans and the Democrats claimed to have carried Louisi- THE ana, South Carolina and Florida, and from those states two sets of returns were sent to Washington. Who should decide between them? The Constitution provides merely that the president if the senate shall, in the presence of the senate and house, open the certificates, and the votes shall then be counted. But when there are two sets of votes, who shall spy which shall be counted? The president of the sen Rutherford B. Hayes. try from another Civil war. The d bitter dispute was left to 15 men, of whom were senators and anwere third other representatives, equally divided between the parties. To guarantee a calm, Judicial decision the remaining third were justices of the Supreme court. Nevertheless, the commission proceeded to decide every essential question in favor of Hayes by a strict party vote of 8 to 7. Alas, the partisan real of that feverish hour burned Just as fiercely beneath the gowns of the Justices as under the frock coats of the legislators. The judgment of the commission was vvithoutorce In law until adopted by the two opposing houses, and some disappointed Democrats in the house balked at ratifying the decision against Tilden. But representatives of Ilayes whispered to certain southern Demo? crats in a secret conference at Worm-ley- s hotel that if they would let the Republican have the presidency, the Republican president would let them have their own state governments. The bargain having been struck, it was kept. After a turbulent night session of the house the result of the election was declared at four oclock in the morning of March 2, 1877, just 56 hours before the inauguration. For three months Hayes himself had been alternating from day to day between expectation of success and defeat Even when he started for Washington on Marcli 1 he was still so uncertain that he frankly told the people of Columbus in his parting speech that he might lie back with them and in the governors chair again in less than a week. one-thir- Rock Many Religious Associations. A report on the Dome of the Rock of Jerusalem Is shortly to tie published and will lie of great interest to the world. It may not be generally known that this place Is the third in sanctity of all the sanctuaries of Islam, and Indeed for a short period it actually formed the Kibla toward which all Moslems prostrated themselves in prayer. Among the more Important religious associations of this rock we may mention that it was here that David uml Solomon were culled to repentance, ami on account of a vision David chose tills site for his temple. From tills same spot Mulmmmed ascended to t lit Seventh Heaven after tiis night Journey from Mecca, and last, ly it is to lie the scene of the Great Judgment. The historical associations are not less striking, and such famous , names as Omar, Suladin and Suleiman are all connected with he rock. From the Zanzibar Gazette. Abdel-Maleic- It Did Come Suddenly. An unusually interesting communication was received by a New York life insurance company from the Iahl-stroMetallic Door company of Chi- cago. A letter, pointing out the advantages of Insurance, was mailed to Mr. Dalilstrom on November 16, 1920. A part pf this letter read as follows: Have you ever thought that your turn may come suddenly. It has long been the dream of geographers to make a series of maps of the world on a uniform scale. Indeed, it is considered unfortunate for school children that the geographies do not sliow ail countries by maps on a single, uniform scale, for unless a student observes very carefully the figures showing the scale of each map or the figures showing the area of the country mupped he Is likely to get the impression that certain distant lands, which are generally mapped on a small scale, are smaller than those with which he Is most fumlliar. Take Australia, for example: The maps in the geographies now used in most of our schools show it on a small scale as large as that used about for the map of the United States; yet Australia is, in fact, nearly as large as the United States only about (2V& per cent) smaller. China is generally shown smaller in area than the United States, yet It Is about larger. The work of preparing maps of the entire world on a uniform scale of one to one million that Is, maps on which one unit (any unit inch, centimeter, millimeter, etc.) represents one million like units on the ground has been under way for several years, and the United States geological survey, of the Interior, has made considerable progress in Its work on the parts of this inop that were asThe signed to the United States. principle used in preparing these maps, If adopted by the publishers of school books, will give the children accurate impressions of the relative sizes of the countries of the world. one-thir- d one-fortie- th one-thir- New American Industry. Establishment of a new Eastern factory with 50,000 square feet of floor space, for the manufacture of artificial pearls from fish scale essence, marks the beginning of a new Amer-lea- n Industry, formerly dependent on Imports from France, Germany and Italy, says Popular Mechanics Magazine. The common herring Is the base of supply for the Iridescent material used, and removing It Is an arduous task, because each scale, taken from certain parts of the fish, yields only a tiny speck of luster. Suction Tube Unloads the Boat. big Ruction tube la used at Oakland, Cal., in the operation of unloading crafts of their cargo of copra. The material is thrown into the hold loose and the end of the tube Is thrust down the hold. The material Is light and the current of air readily picks It up and carries through the pipe to the bins on the wharf where it Is stored. Copra is lighter than cork uid from tropical countries.
