Continued complaints to officials responsible seem nud to fall upon barren soil, nightly the lives and machines of hundreds of motorists are endangered on the more popular routes, such as the Ogdon and Salt Lake and Salt Lake uml lay son roads. The Utah motor "vehicle laws were amended during the last legislature to include the clause. For a number of months after the close of the legislature the new law was given every consideration and through the influence of II. E. This year, however, officers throughout the state have failed to recognize the requirements of the ordinance, and as the result one of every throe machines is now being operated in violation of the headlight law. Board of Equalization Fixes State Tax Levy The assessed valuation of the state of Utah for 1922, making allowance for the changes ordered by the stute board of equalization, is $035,690,064. On this total the board Wednesday fixed a state tax levy of 7.1 mills as compared with 6.9 mills for last year, The state tax levy is made up of 2.4 mills for the state general fond purposes, .2 of a mill for high school purposes, and 4.5 mill for district school purposes. These rates are the maximum allowed by the legislature of 1921. They are the same as prevailed last year, except that the state general fuud levy was 2.2 mills. Of this general fund levy, 28 per cent is divided among the University of Utah, tho Utah Agricultural eol ego and the Brauch Agricultural college. On the basis of 10 pier cent of uncolloctible taxes, there will be a net revenue to tho state general fund for the current year from general property taxes of $989,100. This is practically the same as the estimated receipts for state administration purposes from the state general property tax for the year 1921, set at $980,800. In other words, although the state tax levy has been increased by .2 of a mill, the revenue to the state general fund is not thereby appreciably increased. There will be some slight increase to the three educational iU. stitutions which share the general fund receipts. 0000000000000000000XX00000000000 Failure of France to Exploit Buried City Rivaling Pompeii -- (sjOOOOOOOOOOOOoOOOvC-Of'OOOOOOOOOOOod- ' ' Among tho hundreds and thousands i.othiu;; spent, ami tho excavation ns it must be, of Americans and llrit-- works nrc entirely susixmdcd despite of the tact hut about 15 hectares roish subjects with a sprinkling lmiiu .still to be examined, and it is conbut Dutch Scandinavians, Fwiss, 4 - believed that as great wondenv.kc-.aaispicuously fewer French than might to be discovered as have visited have who be expected, lately already , been, though here seems to bo the the now famous Roman ruins of surprise is expressed not merely complete city which in tho flays of nt the comparative failure of the Its full life contained 90,0(10 Roman French lo exploit one of the most inhabitants and 250,000 slaves. marvelous and instructive ruins of The Roman City Complete the whole world, but their positive Its completeness is the most astonneglect.
