WHAT MAKES AN OLD MAID' PMSCIUA JWi' alt met men. speaking Strictly this is perhaps not a beauty talk aud yet what is more to the beautiful aierage woman than a man who loves her and a home of her own. A many good girls write me to reason know the w hy they do not I am persuaded it is not a question of ben lily alone, for some of the jihologiaphs enclosed are very good looking, and besides one of the homeliest young women 1 ever knew had No, the reason the most proposals. is nioie a mental one, and so I am going to tell you about Mary a very nice pleasant sort of a girl who came to me almost with tears in her yes, and asked me why no men ever gale her invitations and why she spent lonely evenings instead of aid going out to dances, dinners theatres like others. It isnt that I want anything.er-serioushe faltered flushing painfully and looking around to be sure that no one overheard her. I mean, I dont expect every man I meet to propose to me, but I certainly would like to have a good time like other girls, and she ended her statement in ai agony of soil consciousness. It is pretty hard to explain to such wgirl the secret of charm and how un lair it is because serno girl babies have it even in the cradle and others grow to womanhood without ever But just beeiing its existence. cause I liked Mary and wanted to see her if possible happy in a home of her ow n, I made up my mind to watch her and see whnt was wrong with the impression she created. Aid the first tiling I noticed wdiich made me frown, was that she was so painfully anxious to please. When a man addressed a careless remark to her, instead of answering it in s dis-co- v S' i kind with a laugh and waiting for him to renew the conversion or else and going on her way with a smile u nod, alie accrued to grow tense all voice over. Her beeame strained a id artificial, she laughed too loud, she giggled when there was no occasion She did her best to anchoi for it. the man and prolong the conversation and he, being masculine and sens ing the attempt to hold him, seized the first avenue of escape aud fled. Then, like most women who live too much alone or in the society almost entirely of their own sox, sue was unused to the conversational That is game of give and take. where having brothers helps a girl She was morbidly sensitive lot. and took everything personally. She even went out of her way touring in a personal application where none was intended, and when a man. was not busy apologizing he being thoroughly bored. Also, she was a poor listener. She was so busy trying to charm tne mai that she overlooked the fact that he was dying to talk about himself, and that is why she was surprised when a fluffy girl witnout n,n ounce of brain came along and ho quickly jumped to his feet and followed her. I suppose it was her uoll baby she wailed to ine al forward. face! 1 I am not so sure of Unit, I think it is because she returned, is such a good listener, And sure enough I overheard the same man to the llully saying girl a trifle later. And afterward she quarrelled with him and argued with him, aud became offended at things he said, a,ud wrote him loig letters unpardonable crime) so that iu the cud lie had the dickens of a time getting rid of her. After he had made his escape he told a chum that he didnt want any thing to do with any girl who was inexperienced agmu. By that he did nit mean anything that was deep and devilish, but merely that lie wauted a girl wliojas a good iqxirt and was used to nlla uline ways el thinking and I think hat is the mam'tS,1lbb' with Mary and her kind. They only see the world from their tf'11 narrow view point. They eai,ot interest men beeanxe they are selfish and self centered. They wo .. get out of their shells long enough to study them, to dntcover that they ate different; tliut while they haw their sen-distreaks and their pe euliarities and things they like mid dislike just as mneti as women, these are entirely dissimilar. As Mary grows older she will do. velop more primness and more po euliarities rill self eentered people do. She will become eatty also, hlam ing others instead of herself for hot laek tif popularity, Marys mentality is like her dancing, stiff joined and devoid of grace. If I could only make her loosen up, stop of herself nnd stop brooding over the effect she is creating she might even now become atraotive and graceful. But as it stands Mary is not pluming to and bids man, fair to spend her life unloved and unsought because she is not a good playmate anil a goon listener, and because she is so intent on nailing every man she sees that she ignores the fnet tht a hit ot graceful laughing indifference is the best bait in the world to attraet a . much hunted and rather wary sex-1 talking. ve mo.
