Editor Globe-Heade- 25 r: It may interest some of your readers to bear some news from Ibia part of Uncle Sams possession. I see by outside papers many reports sent from here, some of which are so woefully lacking in truthfulness, that if the penalty meted out to Annaniaa waa given those who sent out such reports, the population here would be materially decreased. One article of special note, publiahed in a Seattle paper, said that people were dying here by the hundreds from smallpox, and the bodies of the victims were taken out and buried in the sea, making a weird scene. The fact is there have only been about 25 cases of the disease here, all of which were brought on the first fleet of steamers, and only oue death. The most dread disease is pneumonia from which there has been quite a few deaths. The greatest number of falalities, howeaer have resulted from drowning, and juBt how many men have been swallowed up by tbe treacherous waters of Bobring sea will perhaps never be known. When old Behring curls up her lip and goes on a tear she stirs things up in great abape, and woe be unto those who venture out or should be caught out in small boats. Just one month ago a terrible storm raged here almost incessantly for two weeks, and the number of bodies found along the Bhore since the storm commenced footed up thirty-seveIt is estimated that 100 lives were list dnring the storm. People are continually going up and down the coast iu all kinds of boats, and when a storm comes up, if they do not immed-iat- ly put to shore they aro almost to sure be lost. Quite a number of vessels were wrecked, which were anchored in front of Nome, among them being . G. Rogmms gasoline lannch. 1 stayed up and watched it from the shore allnight. In the morning a large scow broke from her anchor and drifted against the lauuch and sent the little vessel under. Two weeks later we learned that part of her drifted ashore about 15 miles down the beach, She was a complete loss, but had nearly earned her value before she wes wrecked. 1 saw quite a number of vessels drift ashore only to be beaten to pieces by the boisterous' billows. One steamer went to pieces about half a mile from shore, and the wreckage was scattered along the bench for nearly a mile. I never, before I saw this wreck, thought waves coqld break a vessel into each small pieces. n. j Another storm commenced yesterday, which is much more severe than the one a month ago. The waves are rolling mountain high, breaking about half a mile from shore, and the roar is almost deafening. It is a grand sight, and fills one with awe an they stand on the shore and see them rolling along breaking into white foam, seemingly hnntiHg for victims. In attempting to come ashore from a steamer, three men were drowned yesterday morning and three more met a similar fate this morning one of them being tho captain of (he large steamship Oregon; all were drowned in sight of our home. A few mi nates ago a large crowd of people gathered along the beach watching three men drifting ashore W hether on a large lighter. not I have or all in right they got is The storm learned. not yet of abating still raging and instead is getting more furious. Time 'only can tell whet it will end, but it will likely never reveal the less of life. I just recently returned from a trip up north, about 175 miles, in company with E. G. Ilognon, who was recently appointed U. S. Commissioner and tecnr.Ier for the Port Clarence Districts lying sorth cf the Nome District. We the experience was one that wo will long remember. At 8 oclock in the evening we emerged from the mouth of Snake River, which cuts Nome in twain, and with a slight breeze in our favor started toward tho North. I steered the boat the forepart of the night, while iny companion slept, and iu the latter part ho held the helm while I reposed in the arms of Morpheus. About 5 o'clock in the morning I was suddenly awakened under the impression that our little ship wes being ground to powder. But I heaved a sigh of relief when I learned that we had only struck a sand bar at the mouth of Cripple river where we were to 6top for breakfast. Breakfast over we started out again and after sailing about 10 miles, the wind changed dead against ub and then our troubles began. Tor about three hours we tacked against it, ail the time drifting out from the shore, the wind growing stronger all the time. Finally we came to the conclusion we had better bo getting to laud, as we were quite a distance out of and making but very little headway. We reached land safely and remained on the beach for nearly two days. There was plenty of drift wood on the beach and as it was quite cold we kept up a big fire, considering ourselves in very comfortable circumstances, there being lots of ducks and snipe near by, with which we frequently replenished our larder. It was 10 oclock Sunday morning when we again set sail, tbe wind having changed in onr favor and blowing quite briskly. At C oclock in the evening we rounded Point and ei.- -: tered Tort Clarence. The wind bad increased considerably and the Waves were rolling high. I will never forget that trip across Port Clarence Bay. It was 25 miles and we sailed it in 2 hours aud 15 minutes. With such a wind blowing I dont think the little boat would havestoed another square foot of canvass. At times she skimmed along with the sail almost dipping the water, and seemed to jump from the top of one wave to the other, now and then splitting the tops of them open with her noee throwing up the spray, which the wind carried back and deposited in the boat, a considerable portion ofwhich landed on me, I liad over me a robber blanket, but notwithstanding this I was soon pretty well soaked with water. 1 felt greatly relieved when we entered the harbor in front of Teller City, where Mr. Ilognon was to establish his When we told some of the old timers we had just crossed the bay. they looked at each other in amazement. Near this place on what is called the Blue Stone they have made some very rich strikes, richer than any in the vicinity of Nome. On some of the claims they are taking oat with rockers over a thousand dollars a day. A great many other rich strikes are reported from other creeks. There is no doubt bat what this country is very rich in gold, and I believe wh'en it is fully developed it will be the great-egold producing country in the world. U nless the present mining head-qnarte- rs. Bt laws are changed, however, it will be a long time before a new comer will have mnch of a show. The claims have been located by comparatively few people, many of whom wont develop the mines themselves nor let any oue else do so. It is not a very desirable country to live in, and rnoBt cf the people here will leave before the ice stops navigation will spend the winter up at Teller City as I have a lot located there, and believe it will be the coming place next year.
