DEATH OF CHARLES NO. 38. NORTHWEST NOTES. A. DANA, 4 merles a Uroeleat dramatist Faeeea Away at Hie Lung IslaaA llurne. Thera ars five eases of insanity In New York, Oct 17. Charles A. the Butte jalL Dana, editor of the New York Sun, It ia said the gambling law is being died at his home st Glen Cove, Long violated at Butte. Island, at 1:30 p. m., of cirrhosis of the The Odd Fellows' grand lodge will liver. Mr. Dana's death had been for several hours, and hia family and physicians were at hia bedside when th end came. His condition has been feeble for several mouths, and the end waa hastened by the heat on Friday and Saturday. Cliar'es Anderson Dana was burn in Hinw ale, N. H., August 8, 1819. His boyhood was spent in Buffalo, N. Y., where he worked in a store until he was 18 years of age. Ills earliest newspaper experience was gained in the management of the Harbinger, which was devoted to social reform and general literature. After about two years of editorial work on Elizur Wrlght'a Boston fhronotrpe, a dally newspaper, Mr. Dana joined the staff of the New York Tribune in 1M47. The next year he spent eight months In Europe, and upon hia return became one of the proprietors and managing editor of the Tribune, a post which ha held until April, 1863. The extraordinary influence and circulation attained by that newspaper during the ten years preceding the Civil war was in a degree due to the development of Mr. lianas genius for journalism. In 1861 Mr. Dana went to Albany to advance the cause of Mr. Greeley, as a candidate for the United States senate, and nearly succeeded in nominating him. The caucus was about equally divided between Mr. Greeleys friends and those of Mr. Kvarts, while Ira Harris had a few votes which held the balance of power, and, at the instigation of Thurlow Weed, the supporters of Mr. Evarls went over to Judge Harris. Daring the first year of the 4rar the Ideas of Mr Greeley and thoae of Mr. Dana In regard to tha proper conduct of the military operations were somewhat at variance; and this disagreement resulted in ths resignation of Mr. Dana, after fifteen yeara' service on the Tribune. He was at ouee employed by Secretary Stanton in special work of Importance for the war department, and in 1861 waa appointed aaaistanl secretary of war, which office he held until after the amicndar. of Lee,. At tha time when General Grant's character and probable nsefulnesa were unknown quantities, Mr. Dana's confidence in Grant's military ability probably did much to defeat the powerful effort then making to break down tha rising commander. Mr. Dana was in the saddle at the front mnch of the lime during athe campaigns of northern Mississippi nd Vicksburg, the rescue of Cha taiiooga and the marches and battles of Virginia in 1864 and 1865. After the war hia services were bought by th Chicago Republican, a new dally, which failed, through causes not within tha editor's control. Returning to New York, he organized. In 1807, the stock company that now owns tha Bun newspaper, and became its editor. Ths first number of tha Kuu issued by Mr. Dsns tppeared on January 37, 1868, and for nearly thirty years hs has been actively and continuously engaged in the management of thst successful journal, and solely responsible for its conduct. 11s made the Hun a democratic newspaper, independent and outspoken in the expression of its opinions respecting ths affairs of either party. Perhaps to a greater extent than in the cue of any other eonapicnoas journalist, Mr. Dana's personality Is Identified in ths public mind with ths newspaper thst he edited. IIs has recorded no theories of journalism other than thou of common sense and human interest. He wu impatient of prolixity, cant and the conventional standard of news importance. Mr. Dana's first book was a volume of stories translated from the German, entitled "The lllaek Ant." In 1855 he planned and edited with George Ripley. the New American Cyclopedia. With General James II. Wilson he wrote a Life of Ulysses 8.
