The Improvements on the main line of the Baltimore and Ohio, west of, and between Martlnpburg, W. Vn., and North Mountain, were completed November 1st. They rover n distance uf nearly four miles, starting three miles west of Msrtlnsburg, and extending some distance west of Myers Hole, which Is near the North Mountain station. At Myers Hols the line was changed, taking out some very objectionable curvature, and the roadbed raised nearly fifteen feet, eliminating two grades of 42 feet per miles which came together at Myers Hole, and substituting therefor an almost level trark. This point on the road has always been a dangerous one and many freight wrecks bavs occurred there. Apart from doing away with the dangerous feature of two sharp down grades coming together, as was the case In this instance, the saving in operation of the road by the change will be very large, as it enables lbs tons per train to be greatly increased and reducea the liability to accident lo the minimum. At Tablera the road bed haa been lowered about thirteen feet, and the aame at Tabhs, besides taking out objectionable curvature and reducing the rate of grades at these point from 42 feet per mile to ten feet per mile, thus increasing the cars that can be hauled per train. Though these improvements have coat quite a sum of money, the expenditure la fully Justified by the great saving In operation. Gods Kswsrds. Ood rewards not as man rewards. Kdoeoto Your Bowel A OrBBt TtBiisraae KcfurnM General Neal Dow, who died recently at Portland, Me., In the S4ih year of his age, was the munt conspicuous leader io touiperauoe reform in this ouuntry. Tha idea of wholly prohibiting tho sola uf Intoxicating liquors as a beverage originated In Maine, and was lint embodied in what for many yean was known as the Main law." It is Just sixty years ago that Neal Dow and his axst.eiates appeared tho Maine legislature, bearing a memorial drawn by General James of Portland, asking for th enactment of tbat law. 1 he memorial was rejected. Neal Dow kept up the agitation, however, and was grsally helped by the excitement attending the movement, Washingtonian lbs object of which was to reclaim tha Intemperate. The difficulty of trying to reform drunkards, while nothing was done to restrain the saloons from making drunkards, impressed so many minds that Neal Duw's demand for tha kgal proscription of tho traffic found increased support. Ha traveled shout the state, urging the reform, and did not abate his seal, though he was several times threatened with violence. In 18SI the legislature passed through all Its stages, In a single day. an act which outlawed the liquor traffic, and made liquors liable to selxurs and destruction wbcrcvei found. The law was repealed In 1854, only to be the following year with more stringent penalties, sad is 1884 the principle of prohibition wu Incorporated in tha state constitution. General Dow accumulated wealth In business, but his habits were simple. He had a vigorous sad striking personality, and was susceptible no more to ridicule than to threat Ha began his exertions for temperance at the age of 21, when, as captain of a fire company In Portland, he made a strong and successful opposition to the practlflh of providing liquors for the firemen. Through all hi long Ilfs he was a total abstainer. H was twiea elected mayor of Portland, and twice a member of the legislature, and In 1880 was the prohibition candidate far president. General Dows military title was gained In the civil war. In which he served with distinction, especially In the attack on Port Hudson, where h was twice wounded, nnd was afterward captured and taken to Ubby prison. Such men as General Dow are always In advance of public sentiment, and their ardor often leads them to adopt policies which to conservative judgments seem mistaken; but they both kindle and exemplify moral enthusiasm, and public sentiment advances more rapidly than it would without their leadership The "UiIii-Ims1- 1 It was an old-ticustom, whlcll, has gone somewhat out of fashion, to make a great distinction between the best room and tha living room. We do not see when we are the most useful, when we are doing tha most good In our Ufa. We are In this world not to do certain thinga great or small, but to do tha will of God. Tbs greatest thing for any day Is God's will for that day. It may be only to lie still on a sick bed and hup sweet It may be only to sing a little song uf peace when we cannot go out to taks our place In the busy streets. Wa can not know when we are doing the moat good. I suspect that very often our bustling activities Isavs less real good In the world than some of our quiet days which seem to us to be almost lost days. It Is better for as, therefore, to quietly seek to do the will of God, not fretting over the particular form of work or of resting. God can use our quiet Influence Just as well aa our most active effort.
