In youth and early manhood Wilfonl assisted his father in his business of a flour miller, and later conducted a similar business ou his own account. He was always of a religious turn of mind, conscientious aud upright in all his dealings. He first heard the gospel of the Mormons preached ou Dec. 29, 1833, by Elders Zera Pulsipher and Elijah Cheney, nud so qnickly became convinced of its truth that be was baptized into the faith on Jau, 1 of the following year. In April he went to Eirtland, 0 aud became acquainted with the Smith, prophet, and Joseph m May accompanied the little band of Mormons, called Zions camp, to Missouri. He was seized with a strong desire to become a missionary, and in November, 1834, was ordained a priest and went on a missionary tour through Arkansas, Tennessee and Kentucky, where his labors were attained with marked success. In May, 1837, be commenced a second misssiouary tour, which extended over three years, this time visiting Maine and Fox islands. April 26, 1839, he was elevated to the rank of apostle at Far West, E.
