WEEKDAYS: 5:00 to 10:00 p.m. SATURDAYS: Drilling completed in Water HolDrilling of the Tunnel was completed last week. The huge 80 -- ton mechanical mole chewed its way through the tunnel after drilling underground for about 16 months, stated Palmer B. DeLong, Project Manager for the Bureau of Reclamation at the Central Utah Projects Office. The mole began drilling through the mountain range northeast of strawberry Reservoir in November 1968 and was guided in a straight line by a laser beam. It came out directly on target. Drilling was started at the outlet end of the tunnel and the mole worked in a northeasterly direction toward the inlet portal. Because of loose conglomerate type material, about 500 feet at the inlet portal was previously drilled by conventional methods. The mole emerged directly into the already drilled portion. low wilt BY PRE-BUIL- T RESISTANT; LEAF SPOT TOLERANT (D BOISE CASCADE Resistador combines aphid resistance with the ability to produce big yields of high quality hay. Hydraulic grippers braced on the side of the tunnel held the machine stationary while a hydraulic ram forced the cutting head against the rock. After cutting about 5 feet, the machine was moved ahead on runners to obtain a new grip on the sides of the tunnel. The convex-shape- d cutting head was turned at about 7 revolutions per minute. Twenty-nin- e revolving cutter bits are mounted on the head with a tricone bit in the center. Cuttings were caught in revolving buckets and dumped on a conveyor belt for loading in muck cars. Electrically driven trains operated continously to remove cuttings from the tunnel Four to five trains were in operation with about 10 cars to each train. The cars were hauled over Highway 40 on an overpass and dumped in theStrawberry Reservoir basin. Tailings will be covered by water when the reservoir is enlarged. Three shifts worked 5 days per week in the tunnel with 20 to 30 men on each crew. At the mouth of the tunnel a Cut and cover section was constructed over which Highway 40 will pass when it is relocated to accommodate Strawberry Reservoir enlargement. The tunnel was drilled to a diameter. A concrete lining will reduce its size to 10 feet 4 inches. It will carry up to 620 cubic feet of water per second. This is equivalent to the normal summer flow of Provo River. Water from Water Hollow Creek will . be diverted in the tunnel to Strawberry Reservoir, Water Hollow will become the terminal section of the Strawberry Aqueduct that will divert unused flows from several streams on the south flank of the Uinta Mountains. The tunnel is The part of the Bonneville Unit of the CenUtah Project. The project is being sponsored by the Central Utah Water Conservancy District. Completion of the tunnel, including the concrete lining, is scheduled for January 1971. Boyles Bros. Drilling Co. and Gibbons & Reed Construction Company are constructing the tunnel under contract with the Bureau of Reclamation at a cost of 5.594.823. tral earth-borin- 4 Brickey Electronics 274 North 100 Wsst TV Provo and Stereo Repair Color Experts 373-966- 5 ot Service the day you call. of all sets repaired 75 home. irv 90 day parts guarantee.
