Show winter colds and remained home from school a few days, mother would build a fire in the old Royal Oak circulating heater in the parlor and allow us to recline in a big overstuffed chair wrapped in a quilt. We were shielded from the ills of life. And when a kid like I was got tired of reading or drawing, I could always read the message on the wall: Whichever way the wind doth blow, some heart is glad... etc. etc. You know Whichever way the wind doth blow, some heart is glad to have it so; so blow it east or blow it west, the way it blows, that way is best." This little stanza of poetry, burned into a beautiful polished piece of cedar wood, hung in the parlor of the home of my childhood as far back as I can remember. I grew into manhood with that message always before. Some of you kids out there dont know what a Parlor is, huh? A Parlor was a special room in a home that was always kept tidy and unused except on Sunday, maybe. The best rug, stove, wallpaper, chairs etc. were in that room. It was sort of like a Sunday suit. Well when we usta have our annual Jewels of winter Did you know that the tree photographed above is covered with tiny jewels of ice which winter brings? Snow is really ice shaped into minute crystals. Often you will be able to catch a single crystal and give it a quick study before it melts, but more often the flakes combine into groups before they reach the earth. Although they vary greatly in detail, snow crystals all belong to the hexagonal system; that is, they all have six sides or ano-lo- HOW IT FORMS In all latitudes snow forms out of moisin the upper air. Thus from the equator to latitude 30 to about 40, it is an occasionally winter visitant from about 40 to 75, it is generally during a long or shorter period; in latitudes above 75, snow falls on perenial snow. SNOW PHENOMENON One curious snow phenomenon is seen only in low latitudes where the tropical sun in some places sculptures the perennial snow of the mountains into fantastic colonnades so like processions of kneeling human figures that the South Americans call it the snow of penitents." Snow consists of water crystals, though sometimes the snowflake is a shapeless woolly tuft or pellet composed of masses of the typical crystals. Probably no other substance crystallizes in such an infinite variety of beautiful forms as water. The pictures show some of the beautiful ture "Snow Fantasy Ballet" COLORED SNOW Snow comes from super-coole- d droplets held in clouds or iathe upper , These droplets have a temperature far below freezing, but they do not turn to snow until a nucleus on which the crystals can form is provided, such as bits of dust etc. Red, blue, green and even black snow is occasionally seen in many parts of the world. The colors are due to the presence of innumerable tiny fungi or to dust collected by the snow as it falls through air... the air. AimtOflUCO DODGE OCJUEflS CHRYSLER MOTORS CORPORATION CHRONICLE' 7 Thursday, March 13, 1969 that message became burned into my mind as definitely as it was burned into that cedar wood. With aching head, sore throat and through misty eyes, Id read the message and try to apply it. I couldnt think of any heart that was glad that I was sick except mine. I was glad I was missing school and glad I was allowed to use the parlor..I guess I was glad. You know good being a Mormon.. That message on the cedar is basically what we want to believe.... A mother with eight young children stands over the casket of her dead husband who had worried and worked himself to death on a starvation ranch and yet she can look over her brood and wonder how shes going to feed them for the next few years and yet say: John was needed more on the other side than he was here. Someone is made glad." To me it takes a lot of believing to believe that. A good Mormon gets a traffic ticket and he reasons that it was worth the 20 bucks. The 1 e s s o n he learned may save his life sometime, or a feller might get kicked out of his girls apartment and he says: Good, Christmas is coming, I wont have to buy her a present. Ill let her apologize right after the new year. I attended the funeral of a young man a few years ago where an apostle spoke. I walked away from that funeral feeling that the dead boy was much better off than we who still lived. He had the Golden Spot up there all tied up while we who have to live out our full four score years and ten are running a chance of going to hell. So I suppose that regardless of the problems we face, we can find some good in them even though we have to reach out toward the never never land to find the Hello! Today the sun is shining, but the air is still very cold and a reminder that winter is still here. Things are going much the same here at our house. The kids are beginning to talk about their spring festivals solguess Id better be looking for patterns and material for new dresses. The spring materials are so pretty this year. Easter will soon be here too. While shopping on Saturday, we noticed that the stores have their Easter baskets, candies and decorations out. Easter is on the 6th of April this year. I like it better when it comes later in the month then we have a better chance of having some warm picnicking weather. But I suppose most of you mothers have noticed that it really doesnt matter whether its warm or colcC The kids seem to enjoy an Easter picnic whether they are soaking up the warm sunshine or eating all bundled up in their coats. The only thing that really cancels an Easter picnic is rain or bitter cold wind and that has happened plenty of times in the past. Parents have a real battle on their hands trying to emphasize the truth of holidays and their meanings. On two of the most important holidays during the entire year, we must contend with the Easter Bunny its and Santa Claus. Now we are not the kind of parents who suggest that Santa Claus or the Easter Bunny be completely done away with, because we realize that these are part of a childs world and when you stop to think about it, we arent children very many years. But at the same time, because these are the impressionable years of a youngsters life, we still must be very careful on the emphasis we give to each. In order to keep fantasy and truth separated on Easter, we go picnicking on Saturday, the day before Easter Sunday, and we call it Easter Bunny Day. On Friday night, the kids set out their empty easter baskets and during the night, the Easter Bunny fills them and also hides the eggs in the house. Then the next morning, there is the usual excitement and race for the eggs and then we go on our picnic. The olders kids are now starting to go with their friends, but up until now weve always gone as a family. The kids enjoy going down to the lake the most and if the weather it can be a lot of fun down there. And usually there are a hundred or more kids who think so too. Sometimes its been so cold weve had to eat in the car or build a small fire, but weve usually had our first picnic on this But on Easter Sunday, we 1 03 North Main Street Payson, Utah .1 .t in Ageless Grantie I j i SAVE AT i Bzsihij dfoniLtnznt & Qaut Co. 7 25 South State Street i PROVO, UTAH t KEEPING YOUR BONES STRONG r AGABEffiEE HedPic ffliw v PAINTER MOTOR COMPANY t , t Doctor in the Kitchen More Calcium Can Help Research shows that a majority of patients gain improved body storage of calcium as they increase their intake of drinking more milk. Contrary to some beliefs that adults may need less milk in their elder years, the reverse is true you need calcium in abundance as an adult or older person, and milk is your best source. To help prevent osteoporosis, you should push your calcium intake to more than one gram daily. To do this, three glasses of milk a day is a good idea. You should also make sure your diet is adequate in protein from sources besides milk. Adequate vitamin D and C also are essential along with an overall balanced diet chosen from a wide variety of foods. And because bones are stronger if you confront them with some work to do, be sure and exercise, maintaining physical activity sensible for your age. t Z tryto remem- ber the true meaning of Easter by going to church and having a special Sunday dinner. Im sure that many of you have special traditions that you observe in regards with holidays. If you have any that you would like to share,, please call me and Id be happy to put them in this column. CEMETERY MARKERS When they carried my mother out of the old parlor door for the last time, I could think of no heart that was glad that the wind was blowing as it was. One had to reach out toward the hereafter to understand the full meaning of the cedar message... Yes, it was still there, that polished piece of wood with its simple message: Whichever way the wind doth blow, some heart is glad to have it so; so blow it east or blow it west, the way it blows, that way is best. Has it occurred to you that your bones serve you in life and survive you in death. They hold you together while youre alive. They prove you lived after the rest of your body disappears. As a living being, your muscles and the 206 bones in your body, working in combination, control your maneuverability and the very fact of your being a physically independent creature. It is, then, an understatement to the say that the condition, strength, if you will, of your bone structure is of great importance. Osteoporosis Widespread So today Im going to briefly discuss osteoporosis, a disease more widespread than arthritis and estimated to be three times more common than diabetes. Surveys suggest that 25 to 30 percent of women and 15 to 20 percent of men over 50 years of age are vulnerable to bone fracture and disablement. After 50 and especially after 65 years of age the percent of women with vertebral deterioration rises as high as 80 percent. The beginnings of the disease can, of course, begin much earlier in life. Bones Get Weaker In the bluntest of terms, osteoporosis is a disease in which the mass and density of your bones are decreased. They are weaker and more porous. Fracture comes more easily. The falls we hear of so often in older persons may or may not cause the fractures. In some instances, it may more likely be that the bones fracture first, causing the falls. As stated, the disease usually becomes evident, (more often by taken for some other purpose) during your sixties or seventies. But it may begin in your thirties. There is little early warning of its development. Its characteristics include low back pain, back deformity, loss of height and capacity for physical activity. Whats to be done about it? Bone is 99 percent calcium. It is living tissue and is constantly changing. We now know that new bone is continually being formed to replace adult bone that is reabsorbed by the body. Normally, this process is in balance. In osteoporosis, it appears there is imbalance either because not enough calcium is entering the body or too much is being lost. .1 day. heart thats glad. six-sid- ed forms that flat crystals take.
