The fascinating history of this famous old town, once the third largest in Utah, is now being told in churches, school and in public gatherings. Fairfield is a town teeming with memories that stir the imagination and a desire to delve into the history books. It is remembered for the town where U. S. General Albert Sidney Johnston with his expeditionary forces of 2500 men established Camp Floyd. On Wednesday, January 29, 1958, the state of Utah became the official owner of a building, the Carson Hotel, at Fairfield. The building was accepted by Governor George D. Clyde and Harold Fabian of the Utah State Park and Recreation Commission. The Carson Hotel, once known as Stagecoach Inn; a tumbling old building that served as the army commissary, and a cemetery give physical evidence of the towns historical background. .XJ Tha monument, pictured above, was erected many years later by the federal government. It marks the old Camp Floyd Cemetery in Cedar Valley where between 1858 and 1861 some 67 people were buried, most of them soldiers of Johnston's Army. War department records list cause of death ranging from routine diseases to one "killed in action", evidentally from a su$h with the Indians. Detachments of the Army had several brushes with the Indians, but never engaged in any actual fighting with the Mormons, whose "rebellion" it was sent to quell. The burial ground is the oldest military cemetery in Utah, and one of the oldest in the entire west. We must places for The Carson Hofei at Fairfield.
