Show IHIigh School will present "Up With People" next week, Feb. 15-16-- VOLUME 80 NUMBER PAYSON, UTAH THURSDAY, FEBRUARY, 9, 1967 Senior Citizen Center is nearly ready With the last coat of varnish applied to the floor of the building, the Payson center for Senior Citizens is opening for the first time this week. The center is located at 40 West Utah Ave. The first craft to be taught will be oil painting, with Clau-di- ne HONORED AT GOLD AND GREEN BALL Couples married over 50 years were honored at Nebo Stake Gold and Green Ball Saturday night. Twelve of the 35 couples in Nebo Stake were present when picture was taken. Couples are left to right, Marion and Sylvia Black, Lyndon and Eva Crook, Albert and Susan Ashby, and Della Wilson, Alfred and Lena Gill, Samuel and and Edna Hendrickson, Henning and and Nell Wilson, Clarence and Stena Daniels, Kenneth and Zelpha Tanner, Flint and Klea McClellan. Mrs. Arva Allgood was present at the dance but not present when George Permilia Mayer, Arthur Leatha Johnson, Carroll photo was taken. Couples honored at Gold, Green Couples who had celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary were honored at the Nebo Stake Annual Gold and Green Ball last Saturday night. The ball was held in the Nebo Stake Center centered around the theme, Ill Be Loving You Always. A large picture of President and Mrs. David 0. McKay, who have been married 66 years, was mounted in the middle of a large heart and suspended in the middle of the stage. Large paintings of the Salt Lake Temple, Hawaiian, Idaho Falls and Mesa temples were featured in other decorations around the hall. The floor show featuring 13 couples, who were able to attend, included singing of the theme song by Elmo and Cheryl Keck, piano solobyDeana Jack-so- n, dance by Nebo Stake dance group and solo dance by Steven Farr and Mary Lynn Kenison, stake MIA dance directors. The floor show was MCd by Max R. Warner, stake YMMIA supenintendent. Thirteen couples were honored at the dance were Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Hendrickson, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Gill, Mr. and Mrs. Carroll Wilson, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Tanner, Mr. and Mrs. George F. The arrangements for the dance were under direction of Mr. Warner and Afton Rosen- - Gcnola Ward Jr. M Men win Region Championship smooth rolling Genola quintet romped to a 50 - 33 win over Provo 12th to walk off with championship honors in the annual Zone 23 Hunior in the annual Zone 23 Junior Division basketball tournament and qualified for a place in the All Church finals beginning in Salt Lake City Feb. 20. Genola moved out to a 12-- 7 lead at the end of the first period and was never headed as a tight defense and some brilliant shooting helped to keep the game under control at all times. for Halftime score was 23-Genola and they were still in at the three-quart- er 1 the lead at mark. The game was close enough to be interesting all the way but the Genola lead was never seriously challenged. Roger Ewell and Danny Throckmorton, who have been the leading marksmen for Genola all through the tournament, again proved their scoring ability in the final game with Ewell scoring 17 and Throckmorton 15 as they shot their undefeated way through the tour- Ball baum, YWMIA president, with Mr. Farr and Miss Kenison, general chairmen, Joanne and LaMark Wignall were in charge of decorations, and Grant Winegar and Shirley Hardman in charge of advertising. The temple scenes were painted by Shirley Bjarnson and his wife Yvonne assisted with the decorations and made the lettering for the theme. Ed Jensen made the frames for the temple scenes. Some of the couples who had noted their Golden Wedding anniversary were not asked to attend the dance because names of the couples were not given them. It is hoped by the MIA officers that there are not other couples who have been left off the list, if so they extend their apologies and would like to have their names so proper recognition can be given. Mat-tins- on High School sets Founders Day annual Founders Day Program for the combined Parent Teachers Associations of Payson, Santaquin and Goshen, will be held Thursday, Feb. 16, at Wilson School in Payson, beginning at 7 p.m. The new reading program will be the subject discussed. All parents should be interested in this and are urged to attend. The A Douglas Smith, Ronal Mecham, and Gordon Thomas. Consolation honors with its accompanying trophy went to Spanish Fork Ninth Ward who downed neighboring Spanish F ork Third 59-in a well played battle for fifth place in the tourney. Following the final game trophies were awarded to first, second and consolation winners, with a plaque going to Palmyra Third for outstanding sportsmanship. Genola walked away with four trophies, in addtion to the large championship trophy. Arden Throckmorton was presented a trophy as the outstanding coach Throckmorton was given a trophy as the most outstanding player and Roger Ewell was given a trophy as one of the ten top tournament players. Individual trophies were awarded to Robert Sayer, Second; Paul Boman, Kolob 11th; Craig Jones, Oak ney. Hills Third; Dan Shaw, Orem Other members of the Genola 15th; Stewart Morrell; River-groteam are Wade Draper, who Second; Doug Muhlestein, scored 9 points, Saturday, Keith Third; Richard JohnPalmyra Kerby, 5, Lee R. Murdoch, 4, son, Springville 10th; Roger were the other scorers of the Ewell, Genola, and Sid Sandchampionship game. Others on berg, Provo 12th. the team are Nolan Davidson, 49 Pulver as the volunteer instructor. Mrs. Pulver took up painting as an amateur several years ago and is expected to pass her enthusism and knowledge on to anyone interested. The paint class will meet Tuesdays at 3 p.m. in the rerroom of the building. A loom for rug weaving is promised and will be available for use. It has been in the basement of the old Nebo Stake Tabernacle for many years and was once used by the welfare department of the curch. Vernal Twede has been named chairman of the committee for organizing the personel of the center, which is directed by Steve Wilson of the Payson City Recreation Department. Teaching American History, Utah History and seventh grade math at the Payson Junior High is Larry J. Ostler. Mr. Ostler is a native of Burley, Idaho. He attended Los Angeles High, graduating in 1956. After High school, he attended three colleges; Santa Monica City College, El Camio College, and Brigham Young University. He graduated from the BYU in 1966 with a BA degree. Mr. Ostler has worked as a paper hanger and also taught early morning Seminary in Gov. Geo Romney will speak in SL Feb. 20 People in Utah county this week were invited to attend a Lincoln Day celebration in Salt Lake City on Monday, F ebruary 20, featuring an address by Governor George Romney of Michigan. This invitation was issued by Richard Richards, Utah Republican chairman. Governor Romney will speak at a program beginning at 7:00 p.m. on February 20 at the Valley Music Hall in North Salt Lake. He will speak again at a similar program at the Music Hall on the same evening at 9:00 p.m. or from Robert Phelps, Republican Precinct Chairman, Payson. He added that Utah is the former home of Governor and Mrs. Romney, the former Lenore La Fount, and the King Sisters. The King Sisters are well known as national television stars. Governor Romney spent his boyhood in Utah where he was student body president of L. D. S. high school. He also attended the University of Utah. City, LARRY J. The Hiatt twins, Lucille, left, and Lorraine, right, are portraying the moaners and groaners from some of the college campuses and Gun Safety Class n Kiwanis Club has sponsored a singing group. They have presented many ourstanding programs in Payson and neighboring cities. Their greatest recognition came when they presented a program at the District Kiwanis Club convention held at Aspen Grove in American Fork Canyon last fall. starts Feb. 16 American Legion will again sponsor another Gun Safety and survival course. The class will be held at the American Legion Hall beginning Thursday, February 16, at 7 p.m. George Olsen will be the instructor. The group has been under the leadership of J. D. Christensen, director, and Janice Elmer, accompanist, Heber Jones and Robert Finch have been president and vice president of the group. The group have fe.lt that many male singers in the community would like to join them under different conditions. After consideration, it was decided to reorganize under a new name and to include all who desired to join. The name The Choral-i- er was chosen as the name of the new singing group. Temporary officers were were writchosen and ten and temporarily adopted. Several new members have been asked to join. Charter members will be named in the near future and new officers elected. Boy Scouts annual Winter Camp held at Maple Dell Boy Scouts of Nebo District held their annual Winter Camp Friday evening and Saturday at the Camp Maple Dell in Pay-so- n Canyon. The camp began F riday evening after setting up camp in the camps at Maple Dell and then the evening was spent sleighing, tubing, skiing and some ice skating. State Fish and Game Conservation officers presented 3 films, one on survival and two on big game practices. Saturday was enjoyed with many winter sports, climaxed by a lunch prepared and served by the district committee. Every troop in the district was present with 148 boys and 22 leaders participating.
