Jack S.venson of Spanish Folk Junior Chamber of Commerce was a guest speaker. He spoke of the splendid success of their Blood Bank project in Spanish Fork and of the value of having a number of people typed to have available for blood transfusions. Mr. Bates is the oldest man in Payson and observed his eighty-eight- h birthday on October 1. He was born in 1854 in the old Sugarhouse ward, Salt Lake City, the second child of Joseph W. Bates, a member of the Mormon Battahan and Harriett Bihngtnn, a handcart pioneer. The family moved to Payson when Mr Bates was three years old and he has resided here since that tune The old Bates homestead was sold to Payson City and now forms a part of Memorial Park, and the large evergreen near the swimming pool stood in their front yard. Mr. Bates served as Payson City sextan for 34 years only recently retiring the position to his foster son He is a High Priest in the Pay-so- n First Ward and during the construction of their new chapel, he served on the executive committee. He was a Sunday School teacher in the waid for over 35 years. Mrs Martha Bates was born in Smith County, Virginia, April 1, 1861 and came to Utah with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Me Entire when she was nine years old. In her girlhood she worked the farm of Brigham Young.
