The day was warm and bright and cheerful and they had no attraction for me, so I walked out into the air, through the orchard and across a meadow. There at the far end, I paused beneath a tree. There is something soothing and beauiful about dreaming beneath trees. I looked for the colors in the woods and the fields and the trees. A few surviving asters glowed, their purple faded and frostJbitten. The goldenrod was tarnished and rusty. I looked to the mountain side for the vivid red and yellow of the maples, but they had drifted and gone. The aspens were bared to the breezes that were chilled from the north Everything looked ashen and stark and lonely. There is very little of warmth left in an autumn landscape it is all embers. November is around the corner and soon there will be a fleecy white blanket to hide it all. Even Nature seems gTay and omnious. But there is no unbelief in Nature. Albeit the gray bare branches of the apple orchard stretch in the thin moonlight and creak in the cold winds and shrink in the frosts. But who is there that believes that it has given( up hope of ever blossoming again, of the bees and flowers and fragrance, of songbirds nesting in its branches j and fruifladen broughs? Who thinks those dry stalks in the corn field or the withered pumpkin vines are one forever? The glory of the asters and larkspur will come a gain June will again bring new roses and October a new harvest. Life will bud and burst anew and kindle frest fires. It is something to look for ward to! Something to expect. And so winter winds cannot blind us. Ilope is buried beneath the snows and we should have a faith as simple as that of the fields and forests. We do not have to dream disconsolately on. We should see the green flush of spring beyond winters sleep anil find warmth and quiet and peace beneath an autumn moon and autumn atara. trail, loot her head hoof beats and began to shoot.
