Like a bad cold these campaingns flare up at regular and iregular intervals Always the same little click of politicans are found to be the ringleaders in the movement, feeding the more innocent sportsmen with fanciful tales of inefficency and extravagance. And always the shadow of David Mad sen, former commissioner, is seen Would that the legislature could eliminate politics from fish and game affairs of the state just as it is trying to do with the courts and the schools! In the meantime, it is to be hoped that Governor Dern and other state officials concerned be not stampeded into doing the biddings of the opponents of the present comm issioner, but allow him to remain to build a real fish anc game department for the state. This Commissioner Mee cham can do if he will immediately start a thorough house cleaning and surround himself with loyal wardens whose sole interest shall be to improve fish and game manage ment in Utah, rather than to play politics. Most Utahns Vividly l'emember the poor display o sportsmanship of Meechams foes two years ago when he had hardly assumed charge of the department. At tha time a meeting of the state fish and game association was called. Delegates from all the different local associa tions were asked to be in attndance, although no hint was given as to the subjects to be discussed. The house was packed with the most bitter Republican foes of Meecham The commissioner was not present he had not been invited. His sportsmanship-lovin- g antgonists in his ab sence placed all the sins of the department on his should ers, notwithstanding the fact he had only held office a , very brief period. Many of the delegates had never met Mecham. Their first impression of him was given them by those who Hero dias-lik- e asked for his political head in a charger. Movec by the oily oratory of his accusers, (they voted to ask the state executive to oust Mecham immediately. Since then there have been incessant rumblings of un rest. It broke out publicly again about a year ago when political game wardens who owe their jobs to the former game commissioner assisted in electing David Madsen president of the state sportsmens association. Now come Mechams opponents charging, for lack of something else, that he has never been a sportsman, that jaSeunui pjpueuij jood u uaoq snq aq Cojdiua si oq ing several members of his family in the department, anc that he has been unable to get loyal cooperation frtom hi: sting-pullin- g back-stag- e. -- -- employees. J. Arthur Mecham has always been a sportsman, but not a sport or a law violator. He never carries his bait in a bottle. While the expenses of the department may be slightly higher, it should not be forgotten that the present practise of rearing fish !o large size before planting, naturally has increased the cost of fish production. Under the old plan of planting fry, ninety per cent or more were lost Since the present plan has been adopted, ninety per cent have been saved for the fisherman. One daughter of Mr. Mecham works in his offife. This should not be offensive to anyone under the present conditions in the state capitol or city and county offices throughout the state. It seems to be a general practice to em ploy all therelativs possible. The most serious mistake made by Mecham has been his accepting and retaining in office the organization tur ned over to hm two years ago by the former commssioner. department head will be un Any honest and successful trying to get along with a group of appoinLees trained in a political school. They will be loyal to the man responsible for their appointment and to him only. The majority of Mechams assistants have never recognized any leader but David Madsen. It is no secret a mong the sportsmen of the state that some of the present wardens have been hostile and disloyal to their chief ever since he assumed office two years ago. To make Utahs wild life conservation what it should be , Commissioner Mecham should discharge every warden in the state. Laughing and jolly we pulled our sleds quickly up the hill so we could slide down again. The sparkling snow seemed to blind us as we rode on our sleds. As the boys dragged their toes to prevent accidents a cloud of frosty snow blew into our faces. Jack Frost pinched our nose and cheeks turning them a rosy pink. Cold but happy we left the icy hill.
