Show The Payson Chronicle, December 2, 1998, Page 2 MAYORS MEMO November 29, 1998 This Thanksgiving Day was another great, typical "To Grandmothers House for Thanksgiving." All of the hustling and bustling, shopping and preparations, the turkey stuffing, the cooking to perfection, the housecleaning, phone calls, table center decoration, the excitement and the getting together as a family is what creates the Thanksgiving Day magic. My duty was to peel ten pounds of potatoes, boil, mash and whip. Karen always asks me if I remembered to put the salt in the potatoes before they boil. Each member of the family brings their contribution, and before long there isnt room enough in our kitchen for anymore food. After the blessing on the food, the feast begins. Some of the children are through with their dinner in less than five minutes, and the entire dinner is over in about thirty minutes. The children then play, the women talk and the men watch a football game. There are enough leftovers to last a week. How wonderful it is to have most all of the family together once more. How blessed we are in this county and in this nation to have such a bounty of the good things of life. It is 11 :00 p.m. Thanksgiving Night. My family has returned to their homes, and as I contemplate the significance of the day I suddenly realize that three members of our family were here today because they are medical miracles, because of the hundreds of prayers said in their behalf, because of Priesthood blessings, because of the skilled attention and knowledge of the medical profession, and because of their courageous battle for life. For my family I am so grateful and so proud. How thankful we should be to be able to live in our homes in peace, without fear, to be able to worship as we please, to be able to speak, to assemble and to vote and to exercise our free agency. If we dont like the way our government is functioning, we can run for office and help change it not just talk about it. When I ran for mayor of Payson, I vowed to myself that if elected, I would dedicate four years of my life serving my community to the best of my ability, knowing full well that very few decisions please everyone. I promised you and myself that the citizens would be heard without harassment, that we would establish a bottom line "horse sense" economics and that we would encourage COMMUNITY UNITY. The decisions made by the City Council need always to be the ones that are best for Payson -- - now and in the future, and best for the majority of the citizens. The members of the City Council listen to the people, gather the facts, study the issues, listen to the staff and communicate with any specialists who are available and have knowledge about the issues. Then they must exercise their great responsibility and VOTE. For the opportunity of serving my home town, Payson, I am very grateful. We should be so thankful to be able to walk, talk, see, hear, taste, touch, feel, plan, create and to DO. Never did the ability to walk become so important to me as it has in the last five weeks. Remember, everyone has their own little "red wagon" of troubles to haul around, and you might be very surprised what a load of trouble you might get if you trade with someone else. I hope your Thanksgiving Day was as happy as mine. Sincerely, Gordon S. Taylor Mayor P.S.
