Show The Payson Chronicle, February 26, 1992, Page 14 Utah Democratic Presidential Primary Next Tuesday historic move, the Utah Democrats will be holding Presidential Preference In a a 3. next This is the first time in the history of the state that either Primary Tuesday, March major political party has held a presidential primary. Traditionally, Utahs presidential preference has been determined by a straw vote held at local party meetings in late April. However, because this vote has taken place after most of the major presidential primaries, because the vote was not binding, and because Utah has a relatively small number of delegates, this process has had very little influence in the selection of presidential candidates. This year, the Utah Democrats decided to break with tradition and hold a Presidential Preference Primary. March 3 was chosen as the date in order to coincide with primary elections held in other Rocky Mountain states, including Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Nevada, and Wyoming. Area Democrats hope that this "Rocky Mountain Primary" will force the presidential candidates to address issues of concern to our region prior to the National Convention, which will be held later this summer. Local polling will take place at Payson High School from 3 p.m. until 8 p.m. All residents who will be 18 years of age or older on Election Day (November 3) are eligible to vote. Voters will need to affirm that they are Democrats and will need to provide a picture ID in order to verily that age and residence requirements are met.
