Show 4 IPayson plays in The Lions opened their tourney play with the San Juan Broncos. The game between these two teams was one which was close all the way with the lead changing hands occasionally. As the game opened both teams showed signs of first game jitters and as a result the first quarter was low scoring with San Juan taking a 1 point lead. The game continued close in the second quarter with the scoring picking up and a tie of 36-at halftime. Val Jones, a flashy little junior, was leading the Broncos with 9 points and Curtis Burton and Gary Weight lead the the Lions with 11 and 10 points respectively. The tide was slowly moving to the Lions during the third period and the Lions took a 2 in the quarter. point edge 51-The Lions held that edge until late in the game and even increased it before the wall fell in. Big Art Burtenshaw had fouled out with around 3 minutes to go and San Juan was trailing by 6 but Payson was unable to capitalize. Jeff Miller, who scored 18 points, cut the lead to 4 with 2 12 minutes to go. To 36 49 make matters worse Brad Olson fouled out 14 seconds later and Val Jones hit both free shots to cut the Lions lead to 2. Miller and Carter exchanged baskets and with a minute and 46 seconds left the Lions still had the lead but Miller got a tipin on a foul shot seconds later to tie the score with just over a minute remaining. Val Jones scored to put the Broncos in front but Quigley scored on a layup and with 30 seconds to go it was knotted. Jones again got free to score and the Lions pushed the panic button, throwing a long pass out of bounds and San Juan scored again wrapping the game up 7. It was a heartbreaker for the Lions but they had played a good ball game and Payson would come back. 71-6- Payson vs Richfield The Payson Lions came back on Thursday against the Richfield Wildcats. During the first quarter Terry Carter and Russ Ryder were matched in a scoring dual and at the end of the quarter Carter had 11 points and Ryder had 10 but Richfield 8, led During the second quarter the Lions got things going and scored 21 points and Carter continued to do it alL Terry was doing a great job and seemed to be' everywhere. Carter picked up 8 more points during this quarter and had 19 at the halftime intermission.. The Lions on the scoring punch of Carter overtook the Wildcats and had ahalftimeleadof39-35- . From there on the game belonged lo Payson as the Lions continued to increase their lead in the third and fourth periods and finally win by 12. Terry Carter continued his scoring with 12 points in the second half to go with his 19 point first half to end with a total of 31 points and Gary Weight came on to pick up 16 in the second half to get a total of 19. Curtis Burton had 12 and the Lions moved into the semifinal round of the consolation 2 bracket with a victory over Richfield and knocked them out of the tournament. 22-1- 74-6- PAYSON vs CEDAR CITY The Payson Lions came into the Friday game and at the end of the first quarter it looked as though the Lions may be blown right of the floor as Cedar City jumped out to a 9 point edge 18-- 9 on the balanced scoring of Jim Burns, Lewis Chamand Bill Banaszynski. The Lions were having prob- berlain lems getting the ball to stay in the hoop and at the end of the first half were shooting below 50 from the foul line. The Lions had closed the gap to but Cedar 6 at the half 7 City with Banaszynski with 8 points, Berne Leavitt with 10 points and Lewis Chamberlain with 8 points. The Lions high Scorer at the half was Brad Olson with 8 points. During the third quarter the 33-2- by Gary Warren The Payson Lions placed 8th in a 16 team tournament for the Class A Championship this past week. The Lions lost on the opening night of play, dn an upset to a tough San Juan team which went on to take the State Championship. After losing on the opening night the Lions were put in the consolation group where another loss eliminates the team from the 71-6- 7, tournament. The second day, Thursday, the Lions had the Richfield Wildcats as their opponents and the Lions, after being behind early, won the ballgame going 2. away Friday evening, the Lions played a rugged Cedar City team and in the third quarter things looked hopeless for Pay-so- n as they found themselves down 14 points. The Lions never gave up though and pulled even and took the lead from the Redmen. They then held on to win in a wild finish, 1. With the Lions coming back and winning 2 straight the Lions played for 5th place against the Wasatch Wasps, Saturday night. The press worked wonders and the Lions shot better. By the end of the quarter, spearheaded by the scoring of Brad Olson the Lions had pulled back within 3 5. In the fourth quarter Coach Roberts put Burton back in the lineup and Burton hit 3 clutch outside shots along with the scoring of Weight and Olson to push the Lions in front with time running out. A big blow hit the Lions when play maker Olson fouled out with 20 points and Roberts went to Jim Durrant to fill the spot. Durrant performed admirably but Cedar City fouled for profit by fouling Durrant who missed from the charity stripe and the Redmen climbed back 48-4- within 1 and then fouled Durrant on an intentional foul with 5 seconds to go. Durrant missed both free throws but Cedar City didnt get a shot off coming down floor and the Lions won in a wild thrilling game, 62-6- 1 and advanced to playoff for consolation against Wasatch Saturday night. open 7 - their SntBAIjp-MATTHA- Wasatch couldnt miss. Dell Gardner with 27 points and clutch baskets during the ballgame kept Wasatch in front when the Lions got close. The Lions bowed to Wasatch Terry Carter, playing his last game for the Lions had 21 points and a fine performance and finished very high in the scoring championship during the tournament with 82 points for a 2.5 per game average during the tournament. The others closing out their season for the Lions Saturday were captains Brad Olson and Curtis Burton, who have played well the whole year and shown fine leadership, and Mark Joe Quigley and Jim Durrant who also have done a fine job and done honor to the silver and green of the Lions. 66-5- 6. The Payson representative, Payson 5th, ran into bad luck the first two nights and were knocked out of the tournament. Payson did win on Thursday 0 over University but lost to Springville 3rd on 3 Wednesday and then lost to Provo 22nd Friday night to be eliminated. The decrease in the waiting period between elk permits allowed several thousand more elk hunters to participate than in previous years.
