So the number of noblemen is not much Increased by the king's annual distribution of titles, as the holders and their wires usually are too aged to enjoy It for a long time, and their children do not benefit from It at all. The expenses of becoming a baron are rather high, because the state lev--! lea a tax on registering any new title of nobility. The official recording of a title costs $150. The title of baron Is taxed $110 besides, while a new viscount has to pay $150 In addition, a prince or duke $300. To this Is added The the expenses for a certificate. certificate Is a marvelous document, hand written by experts and hand painted In the manner of medieval documents. Without such a certificate the title Is not worth a cent With the certificate It Is worth at least the $T77 paid fo It and, in the eyes of the world, probably much more. Five or six cases are known where men refused the honor of becoming a baron or count They did so because 'they thought their name was good enough without the title. This man, declared to be the most remarkable character to have ap peared In a French criminal trial since the days of Landru, is thirty-threyear-ol- d Charles Barataud, being tried at the assizes at Limoges, in soutli western France. Every day when lie Is conveyed from Jail to the courthouse he is surrounded tv a squadron of onv airy to beat back the angry mob clam oring for the head of the youthful millionaire. The trial had to be postponed one day because the general commanding the local garrison wrote to the judge stating that he could not supply a force of troops sufficient to Insure the safety of the prisoner against the enraged mob in the streets. Barataud Is accused of having murdered the driver of a taxicab for the sake of his money and to have later shot down a youthful friend who knew Baratauds secret. It Is alleged also that he planned the murder of two other persons who, however, suspected his intentions and were able to overcome Lira when they kept the rendezvous he had nmde with them In the woods near Limoges. The weak point in the prosecutions case Is to show cause why Barataud, the son of a millionaire and himself ranking as having a like amount of wealth, should kill a taxi driver, unless he had been overcome by mania. Two Suicide Attempts. All kinds of legends have been woven around Barataud by the local people. He was credited with the declaration that he would never be brought to trial. Twice he was found in his cell with knife wounds and nearly died both times. The trial is likely to go on for weeks yet. Meanwhile fresh forces of Infantry and cavalry have been requested from neighboring garrison towns. The town is well placarded with bills denouncing the partiality of the court towards the prisoner, since It Is contended that his money is In his favor. This case recalls that of another millionaire and aristocrat, the Comte de Rojac, who a few months ago received sentence for seven years Imprisonment for the murder of his son born to the family servant girl. There was an outcry then because It was claimed that the familys money had saved the noble youths head from the guillotine. it Strenuous Task Faced by Far North! Judge Edmonton, Alberta. One of the most novel experiments with wild life ever attempted In Texas is to be made ranch which upon the 1,280, belongs to the estate of the late Mrs. Henrietta M. King. There lately arrived at the ranch a shipment of three wild boars, a male and two females, from Africa, and they have been turned loose In the chaparral of the big grazing domain wilh the idea that they will take up with droves of jaelimis, or wild musk hogs, that make t lie big domain their habitat. The African wild hogs are larger than the native javelinas and are dif ferent in other respects. The Javell nas are marked by a brown band around their shoulders and by a musk sack from which an almost overpowering offensive odor is emitted when the animal is angered. Even if It proved that the wild hogs from Africa will not cross witlt the Javelinas It is expected that the Imported stock will multiply rapidly and that in a few years they will afford fine sport for hunters. The wild African hoars are ferocious and dangerous, but no more so than the javelina boars. Upon the ranches of Soutli Texas javelinas roam by the thousands in great droves. They are a constant menace to deer hunters because they put tip a fight whenever they encounter a human being. It is the common practice for a hunter when he comes upon a drove of Javelinas to climb the nearest tree and there await his companions to come from camp ?:dc! rs'2,, him. 000-acr- e PARAMOUNT ple.
