Show ROUND ZSbTOWN by t Davi 213 and) Evans Dear Reader: The major problem in the writing of a column is having to meet a deadline (press time) each issue; one. hasnt time to reconsider times the impact of his message. But this column today, Ive reread, rewritten, slept on it and I want you, Dear Reader, to read it all twice before you call me, write me a letter or write a letter to my editor, who, by the way is enjoying all this. Last week I promised to knock off on this Shakespeare bit, but it seems Ive stirred something up that cant be stopped with one try. Ive . Teacher surpluses replace shortages Teacher shortages experienced in Utah and other states in the years after World War II are rapidly being replaced by teacher surpluses. This was the conclusion reached by Utah Foundation, the private research organization in a study of teacher supply and demand in Utah. Most of the new teachers hired by Utah school districts last year were employed to fill vacancies resulting from the turnover of staff rather than the creation of new teaching posts. In 1969-7- 0 the number of teaching positions in Utah by only 223, a rise of 1.7. On Lady riders sought for queen contest All lady riders from all parts of the state are cordially invited to participate in the annual Queen-O-de- o Saturday, June 20, at 8 p.m. at the Lehi Rodeo Arena, in the selection of a queen and two attendants who will reign over the Lehi Roundup on June 25, 26 and 27. All girls, 16 years and over, that have not been a former queen of the Lehi Roundup and have not been a queen or an attendant of a previous show this year will be eligible to compete. Former attendants of the roundup are eligible to compete. Judging will take place on points as follows: Horsemanship 50, general appearance 20, and mount 30. Stallions will not be allowed as mounts. The queen and her two attendants will make radio and television appearances, as well as visit the Governor of the State of Utah to extend an invitation to him to attend the Lehi Roundup. A full evening of western entertainment is planned FREE OF CHARGE for the Queen-O-de- o, which will include bareback bronc riding, kids calf riding, and team roping, as well as a number of mounted contest events. The highlight of the evening will be the selection of the queen and two attendants. Anyone wanting to enter in the contest should contact Dale Peterson or committee members, Marv Pulham or Dean Lott anytime up to 8 p.m., Saturday night, June 20. theQueen-O-deochairma- n, EAT BEEF for Fathers Day the other hand, 1,803 new teachers were hired to fill vacancies created by turnover of staff. These figures exclude 673 teachers who transferred to other districts within the state last year. The Foundation report shows that Nebo school district employed a total of 454 professional school personnel in 1969-7- 0. This represented an increase of 3 in the size of the professional staff for the year. A total of 78 persons were employed to fill vacancies created by individuals who did not return from the previous year. The turnover rate in Nebo schqol district was 17,2. It should be during 1969-7- 0 noted, however, that this turnover rate may be exaggerated somewhat by individuals who transferred to other school districts within the state. In contrast to the leveling off in the demand for new teachers, the supply of new teachers has been growing rapidly The in Utah, according to the study. number of prospective teachers graduating from Utah colleges has increased more than three fold within the past fifteen years. It is expected that 3,071 college-traine- d teachers will graduate from Utahs six teacher training institutions this year. This number compares with 2, 209 teacher graduates recommended for certification in 1965, 1,678 graduates in 1960, and 919 graduates in 1955. Because of the growing supply of trained teachers graduating each year from Utah colleges and the leveling off in the demand for new teachers by the Utah schools, the percentage of graduates who obtain teaching posts in Utah has been declining during recent years. In 1963 and 1964 approxiteachers mately 55 of the college-traine- d secured teaching positions within the state. By 1969 the percentage had dropped below 42. In addition to recent graduates of teacher-trai- institutions, Utah recruits some teachers from former teachers who wish Jojheturn to teaching and teachers livingnfother states who wish to transfer to Utah. During the 1969-7- 0 school year, Utah employed 298 teachers who had taught the previous year in another state. A total of 63, or 21, of these teachers had come from California. Foundation analysts note that with the increased supply of qualified teachers, the emergency or authorized teacher serving without proper certification has largely been eliminated from the Utah schools. In 1969-7- 0, only 121 teachers in Utah (less than 0.9 of the total) were teaching without proper certification. The percentage of emergency teachers in Utah has been reduced steadily from 35 in ning 1946, 23 1965. in 1950, 8 in 1960, and 4 feature osoa otoice s- rect, George, I diagramed the sentence.) And when I wrote the column that started this hassle, I did not have her in mind. I was probably biased by my own sad experience when as a junior in high school I was exposed to Shakespeare. We had a bare book and our teacher had no access to film strips, tapes, slides or recorders which as a rule have musical accompaniment and Im not sure the teacher was in love with her work. I was 16 when I wrestled with Julius Ceasar the first time; I saw him through a glass darkly, but when I met him for a return bout, I was 20 and one; I saw him then face to face. What Im trying to say, My Dear College Friends, is that there is a readiness for all things and if a high school student is ready, let him have it. In the mind of this empty headed drama teacher, I havent met too many high school students who can successfully handle such a role. No one can accuse me of disliking Shakespeare. We have in our home recordings of eight of his major plays and my wife and I relax to the great messages which means more each time we hear them and I plan them to go on meaning more, tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow. AND This Roys in READ THIS! I have been criticized for the types of plays that have been presented on the stage of the Spanish Fork High School. I have chosen such plays because I believe that education in our world today must be a training that can be used now. We cant afford to have the message have a slow reaction.
