Show 4 THE PAYSON CHRONICLE Thursday, March 5, 1970 Final cutter races Wins region wrestling championship Ogden, to wrestle in the State Meet. Along with Robert, were Jenz Horn, Lamarr Jones and Russel Jones. Hard luck plagued Jenz and Russel, but Lamarr and Robert Porter, wrestling at 115 class, completed his undefeated season against region four competition, by winning the regional championship at Springville High 4. School February Robert, who celebrated his 18th birthday on March 2, is 54 tall and normally weighs around 126. However, for wrestling, he trimmed down a little, and made the 115 class. After the Regional Tournament, Robert made the trip to Bonneville High School, in Lamarr Robert were more fortunate. split, winning two matches and losing two, but Robert had the good fortune to win three while losing one match, and return home with fourth in the State Match. Last Thursday Robert defeated Myers of Brighton 2. Friday afternoon he defeated 13-1- 6-- The Nebo Cutter Racing Association will run their final championship races of the year at their Cutter Pacing Track just North of the Old Canning Factory providing the weather will permit. Cutter racing is becoming very popular in the state and some of the top horses of the state will be here to compete. Holding top places in the Nebo Association are Reed Hughes and Ken Warren with drive, Ron Ferguson in the A Division. Wayne Grazer with Thayne Tilford hold 2nd place in the A Division. Jones Koyle holds third place in the overall time average; fourth place in the overall average and out of the open division is the team of Bert Lamb and Blaine Mitchell. These four top teams will go to the World Championship Cutter races which will be held at Pocatello, Idaho. Heading the association this year has been Dennis Tanner who has done an excellent job in being responsible for the organization of the Nebo Association. Others that have contributed to the building up of the cutter racing in the valley are the Diamond Fork Riding Club, Spanish Fork City, Utah County and the support of a good group of 35 members and directors. The team of Hughes and Warren had the fastest average time of the two-da- y Winter Carnival run at South Jordan on Feb. 28th and March 1st. Also winning the first day was the team of Lamb and MitchelL There were 104 teams participating in this invitational meet which consisted of some of the best horses in the State. We would like to invite everyone out on March 7th to watch these fine horses run for the last time this year. Jaramillo of Kearns 2. Friday evening Robert lost to BrimhaU of Olympus 2. However, he came back Saturday, and pinned Nelson of Spanish Fork for a fall, and his place in State. Robert is sporting a beautiful medal on his Letterman Jacket indicative of his wrestling ability. Congratulations to Robert Porter, another fine Payson Lion. Bill come to Payson with tremendous experience, having spent eight years at Timpano-go- s, plus the last two years at Richfield. In addition. Bill is a graduate of the Professional Golf Association (PGA) Business School in California, and a Class A" member of the Professional Golfers Phil Lundell, Payson City Association. Councilman in Charge of the Golf Course in making the announcement, reminded local duffers, the course is now open and ready for play. Bill Rupper is presently working on a Degree in Business Administration at Brigham Young University, having attended the Y and playing on the golf team under Buck Dixon. Bill started golfing at thirteen planning all the time to become a PRO. While in Richfield he was instrumental in inagurating a fine junior program with younger students as well as Scouting has also high school ages. benefited from Bill Ruppers association. He is married to the former Pat Halgren of Salt Lake City, they are the parents of two small golfers, Lavon Kaye 3 and her caddy Randy William 10 months. Plans are underway for a thorough rejuvenation of the course. After the mild winter, and with what appears to be an early spring, the layout will be getting a good workout before long. Greens are being aerated and the whole course is getting fertilizer. Several bunkers are being changed, and a study of the 9th water hazard is being made to upgrade the pond. Bill is enthuastic about Gladstans future, and well he might be. Golf is the fastest growing sport in the country, and right here in Payson, we have a fine nine hole course of our own. Usually golfers can go right onto the first tee without waiting, and weather wise, Payson excells for Central Utah. It is to be expected that golfers in the northern part of Utah will gradually get wise to Payson, and other courses in Utah County, and beginJhe treck down south. This has been happening in a small way over the last couple of years, but with more and more golfers, and longer lines waiting to tee off, lookout Gladstan.
