Show 5 THE PAYSON CHRONICLE Payson, Utah - 84651 - Thursday, iSOy May 30, 1968 John Preston Creer Announces Candidacy Pratt Kesler Returns To Political Wars former Utah attorney eral, A. Pratt Kesler of Salt A gen- Lake City, announced that he is again a candidate for election to that office. Mr. Kesler served as attorney general from 1961 to 1965. He is a Republican. Long active in affairs of the bar and the Republican party, Mr. Kesler is a past president of the Utah State and Salt Lake County Bars, has been chairman of the state GOP organization and was a member of the Republican national committee. During the Eisenhower administration he served as United States attorney for Utah. Mr. Kesler is presently one of two Republican members of the Utah State Tax Commission. He is a partner in the Salt Lake City firm of Callister, Kesler and Callister. 1 believe that it is evident to the overwhelming majority of Utahns that a change is needed in the attorney general's office, Mr. Kesler said in a statement announcing his candidacy. 'The job is an important one; the work to be performed there is serious business. It touches upon the lives of every citizen of the state. The job is not being done well today. 'The office should be headed by an experienced and hardworking attorney who enjoys the confidence of members of his profession and of the public at large. He needs to be a man of good common sense. He must above all be a fair, impartial interpreter of the law,' the Republican aspirant continued. 'Too often in the past three years the office has been used as a vehicle to voice the pet peeves and irrelevant opinions of the incumbent office-holdwith concern being only incidental er, John Preston Creer, former Salt Lake County Commissioner, today announced his candidacy for the Democratic Nomination for the Attorney General. In a prepared statement Mr. Creer said: National events have given a new dimension to the office of chief legal officer of this State. This office, among other things, can be an effective force in cultivating respect for the law and in maintaining order. Our countrys crisis is a crisis of the spirit and Americans are looking more earnestly to the law, both for protection and as a means of establishing t h e i r rights. I believe my knowledge of and experience in national and local government, the practice of law and experience in business has equipped me to be an effective advocate for Utah and administrator in this important office. Since Utah was founded by those who had been oppressed, I will do whatever I can to see that there will be none oppressed amongst us. I will seek to work in harmony with the Governor, Legislature and all other State and local officials. Any citizen who desires to be heard will be heard. Those laws which are in need of revision will be revised and submitted to the Legislature for their consideration. ' My family has enjoyed living in Utah for many generations and I am grateful that I can attempt to repay, in some small measure, the bounties it has provided. I can think of no place I would be happier to live or to raise my family. Mr. Creer graduated from the University of Utah and George Washington University Law School. He served . mission in England for his Church and is active in Church affairs. He is a member of the Utah State Bar and the Salt Lake County Bar and was associated with the law firm of McKay and Burton. He also serves on the boards of several Utah corporations. He served as assistant ffe. niticn Probate Guardianship NOTICES Consult the County Clerk or the Various Signers For Further Information NOTICE TO CREDITORS Estate of JOSEPH WOODRUFF RICHARDSON, Deceased. Maughan announced his candidacy for Democratic nomination for Congressman from the First Congressional District of the State of Utah on May 9th. He is a resident of Bountiful. A veteran of World War II, Mr. Maughan practiced law for 17 years with offices in Salt Lake City. He is a former assistant attorney general for Utah and has been admitted to practice in the Supreme Court of Utah and Lower Courts, U. S. Supreme Court, Federal District Court and Court of Appeals. In his announcement he stated: "I have absolute confidence and faith in the young people of Utah and ,the United States and their ability to continue the expansion of the Aiperican ideal offreedom and justice for all. They must be given every opportunity to carry forward in an atmosphere of peace and order, with equal rights for all. The duty and responsibility of every citizen is to obey and respect the law; this is an integral part of each individual's civil rights. Peace and order in our country can be sustained through restrained but effective use of our existing institutions. I want Utah to have a strong voice in one of those Institutions - the Congress of the United States' to Con- gressman, DavidS. Date of first publication, May 16, A.D. 1968. Dave McMullin Today, I am intention to run nomination and the United State announcing my for and win the the election to Senate. My purpose in seeking this office springs from my desire to provide a vital, active and dynamic representation for this! great state in the Senate of the United States. I believe, as Senator Hayden of Arizona so ably expressed yesterday on his retirement, that contemporary events need contemporary men. Four years ago, in partnership with Governor Rampton, we established a program to bring economic growth to our state. We have been successful in this program and the people of Utah support it. It is my intention to continue this work for Utahs growth on a national level from the United States Senate. My primary concern will be to represent the interests of the people of Utah and the West, rather than eastern interest groups. I believe in the free enterprise system and in the opportunities it extends to every man. I fear, however, it is rapidly becoming a closed opportunity for a few rather than an open opportunity for many. In Senator Bennetts opposition to the legislation, he insisted that such a measure would not succeed because the people of this nation were incapable of computing simple interest. That shows contempt to me - contempt for the free enterprise system which allows each man to rise above his circumstances and fulfill for himself a new role in society. In 1950, during Wallace Bennetts bid for the U.S. Senate, he attacked his opponent, the late Elbert D. Thomas because of his age. At that time, Senator Thomas was 64 years old - Senator Bennett, today, is 69. But age is not the issue; the issuev rather, is ideas. We have not seen in 18 years of senatorial seniority any evidence of progressive ideas that have produced the dynamic legislation the people of this state and this nation have demanded of this man. . The Senators ideas are the rigid and inflexible ideas of the Nineteenth Century. What this state and nation need are qualified, vigorous and vital men with creative minds to meet the demanding problems of the second half of the Twentieth Century. I believe in Utah; I believe in the future (of this great intermountain region;' I believe both are deserving of a voice that "will represent their needs and will work for the development of their potential. I contend that Senator Bennett has not been this voice. long-overd- ue truth-iri-lendi- ng ren. given to the truly pressing that the attorney must change. I This has. general pledge that it will change if I am returned to the office.' A Help Wanted Attorney J. Grant Richardon or Evelyn R.
