JUNE Unsinkable Molly Brown opened 1966 9, this week at Valley Music Hall, Food Stamp Program initiated June 1 Bye, Bye Birdie opens on June 20 in County at Bank The Fmid Stamp Program was initiated Wednesday in Utah County with ceremonies at three of the banks in Utah County selected to sell stamps. The first food stamps were sold at the Bank of American Fork, the Bank ol Spanish Fork and at Walker Bank in Provo. Mavors and Countv Com- missioners were present along with members of the County Welfare Board, the Count v Welfare Director, Bessie T. Meiling, and the Agriculture Department representative. Clifford Burkness. The Food Stamp Program is administered nationally by the Consumer and Marketing Service of the U. S, Department of Agriculture. The program helps lamtlies with low income to buv more food with bonus coupons. It will be an effective wav to safeguard the health of the familv through better nutrition. The amount of stamps purchased will depend on the size and income of the familv. The State Welfare Department through their local county welfare offices is certifying eligible families for food stamps. The Utah County Welfare Department with offices at 260 West 300 North in Provo will interview applicants for food stamps. Most of those w ho receive Public Assistance have already been certified. Others may be eligible if their income and resources are within limits set by the State Department of Public Welfare. This may include families who receive unemployment compensation, social security or railroad retirement benefits or other pensions. The Department of Agriculture has authorized retail grocers to accept food stamps. Their department pays the difference between the amount the family pays and the value of coupons received. Retailers then redeem the coupons through the banks. Retail grocery stores who have not as vet been authorized must make application at the Consumer and Marketing Office, Jetting in from Los Angeles last Sundae evening was Jane Powell. At the end of April, 872 nurses from throughout the nation have been commissioned. The previous record for a period was registered in fiscal year 1962, when 830 nurses were commissioned in the U. S. Air Force. In addition to the record for the year, a one month mark was set in April, according to initial reports from the seven recruiting groups, when 162 nurses were commissioned in the U.S. Air Force. The prior monthly record was set in March of this year when 160 nurses were commissioned by the Air Force. To meet the continuing need for more Air Force nurses, applications are being accepted at all U. S. Air Force Recruiting Offices throughout the nation. To become an Air Force nurse, an applicant must: be a graduate of a school of nursing which is acceptable to the U. S.
