This scene with variations, has been repeated many times in Nebo School District since the Home Visiting Teacher program was begun almost fifteen years ago, said Mrs. Agnes Zeeman. Handicapped children, children permanently disabled in various ways and children out of school for short periods of time, have been helped to reach the academic goals expected of the more fortunate youngsters who are seldom ill. Nebo District has three, Mrs. Agnes Zeeman, Mrs. Jess Peterson and Mrs. Joy Gledstated hill, Superintendent Russell N. Stansfteld. This year alone thirty child ren have been helped by the program in the Spanish Folk area alone. Some of these youngsters have disabilities which keep them out of school permanently. Most of them are youngsters with illness keeping them home for varying periods of time. To obtain the home teaching service, a child need not fit into any particular category, nor is there a complicated pro cedure to go through. Any child, who is well enough to study, is eligible, whether he is to be out of school for a week or for a longer period of time. There is one exception a communicable disease. If a child is convalescing from an operation, an illness, or a broken limb, etc., the parent may call the classroom teacher, the principle, the school nurse or even the visiting teacher personally. If the school nurse notes that a student is out of school for three days in a row, she will contact the parent first This service is even extended to children who are hospitalized. From then on things move rapidly, The nurse obtains permission from the attending doctor to start home teaching, the Visiting Teacher pick up books supplies and assignments from the classroom teacher, and the program is under way. Usually there is no more than one day until the child is working on his reg ular school assignments. There is on age hmit, either. The three visiting teachers in Nebo District are prepared to teach all students from first grade through twelfth. The classroom teachers are most cooperative and willing to give any extra help needed. A1 though it is impossible to pro vide as rich a program as a classroom situation does, students in the home teaching program are taught all the basic subjects and go back to school well informed on most subjects the regular class has been working on. Visiting teachers work directly under the supervision of J. Dean Jones, Director of Special Education in Nebo District. Mr. Jones asserts, This is one of the most valuable teaching programs in the whole school system. It is impossible to measure the contribution a visiting teacher gives to the academic life of a homebound child. Our Home Visiting Teachers are efficient and conscientious. They put the wellbeing of the children they teach above every other consideration. members who propospective pledged membership earlier in the year or who were not contacted during the main drive.
