Show The Payson Chronicle, Payson, Utah June Thursday, 7, 1962 Growth Notes Santaquin-Tinti- c By Beulah G. Bradley Phone 754-3- 621 Have you ever stopped to consider the deep effect that sentiment has on our lives? Of course there are some folks who would rather be called most anything than to be called sentimental. Still if he were completely truthful even the crankiest man alive has possessions which he values highly. This is sentiment. I once heard of a lady who died in poverty. She supposedly had nothing in the small room she inhabited but ruble and confusion. At the time of her death her neighbors whom she had turned from many years before, came to do what could be done, now, that her biting tongue had been stilled. She had died penniless, needing food and warmth, but denying all offers of assistance from the many who wanted to care through out the years Could a women in such circumstances and of such temper ment be accused of having sentiment? Well, near her bedside stood a small antique table, which was the only polished clean article in the roam, and on that table was a lovely photograph of a child. It was in an expensive gold frame. Small locks of blond curling hair had been placed under the glass. A golden wedding ring tied with neat velvet ribbon was attatched also to the frame. The frame alone told a story of former wealth, in that other life. It could have been sold to bring months of food and warmth to an elderly recluse. No one knows why she attatched so much sentiment to the picture of a child in a golden frame. No doubt it could have been a daughter. This was sentiment in its highest form. And found in such and otherwise sordid room made those who saw, wondered at the sentimental value of a table .picture in golden frame and a ring, that she would give her life rather than be parted from them. Perhaps some would say it was the foolish notions of a senile old woman. But others of us would say, But o what sentamentality! What wonderful love! The Institute will serve as an international crossroads for new ideas and discoveries. Eminent scholars from such diverse sciences as biology, genetics, chemistry, physics, mathematics and philosophy will join Dr, Salk there as Senior Fellows. Visiting scientists will come from all parts of the world, and promising young men and women will be invited as Student Fellows to work with and learn from the established leaders. Construction and equipment of the Salk Institute will cost approximately $15 million. Through their generous support of the Salk Institute Building Fund, the American people, who took such a vital part through the March of Dimes in bringing about the momentous medical discovery that was the Salk vaccine, will bring to reality a great inten national scientific center, dedicated to helping man make the best of his gift of life. . the available water.
