Statement Read At School Board Meeting Letter to the Editor Dear Editor, Following is a statement I read to the Nebo District School Board at their meeting held on February 1 1, 1998: Id like to read a statement that Ive prepared. For your information, I dont belong to any organized group, so when in my statement I say "we", I am referring to myself and to other parents I know from around the district who have had the same or similar feelings or experiences. I am a mother of young children who attend school here in the district. It is more my nature to quietly observe, rather than actively participate in events that might be happening around me. However, when the things happening affect my children, I am not afraid to stand up and do something about it. People like me are your worst nightmare, a thorn in your sides because we try to make other people aware of whats going on in the district. You drive us to it with your superior attitudes and secretive ways. We have a right to know what you are doing here, to be concerned and even frightened when we hear of some of the programs you have implemented or plan to implement in our schools without our knowledge. We elected you and in doing so, placed in you our trust to represent our interests and those of our childrens. My greatest concern with the board is your seeming lack of accountability. I expressed this concern earlier this week when I spoke with Governor Leavitt. His staff has agreed to investigate the boards conduct and he suggested that we as parents use our power at the ballot box to vote you out. This is exactly what we intend to do. You have abused our trust and your power by keeping us in the dark, hoping for blind trust and being offended when we open our eyes and see what you are doing. We must fill out a form to speak to you and when we do, you are condescending. You speak to us as if we are just to understand. This is offensive and done in hopes of discouraging us too simple-minde- d from expressing opinions in the future. If we appear at a school board meeting, our principal is called and warned that we might be trouble. If we dont approve of something going on at our school and try to make other parents aware of it, we are called into the principals office where it is implied that the members of the faculty dont like us anymore and that they would consider forgiving us if we would just be quiet. This again is done to discourage us. We do not deserve to be labeled troublemakers and radicals because we want to protect our children. We should not be made to feel ostracized for choosing not to leave the education of our children to the establishment if we feel the establishment does not have their best interest in mind. We enjoy many freedoms now because a few people were willing to risk such persecutions for the greater good. Again, I dont belong to any groups, I dont have an agenda that I am trying to further, I am just a mom who is willing to fight for what is right and good for my children. In closing, I feel I need to say one more thing. You obviously have a lot of power. It would be my hope that you use some of this power to change the way you handle a few things. You could smooth a lot of ruffled feathers if you would simply stop seeing the parent as the enemy. Instead of cringing or rolling your eyes when you see us, smile and welcome us as partners in your childrens education. Be open and honest with us, we wouldnt make you nervous if you didnt have anything to hide. Treat us with respect and encourage your principals and other employees of the district to do the same. All is not well in the district as you work so hard to have the public believe. It doesnt have to be this way. We are doing what we can to make it better and would like to see some effort on your Part. Regardless of what you do, we are not going to go away. We will do what needs to be done for our childrens sake.
