of iron county taxpayers was held last saturday afternoons afternoon in ceda cita cit under the tb direction of f the iron county committee of the utah taxpayers association the meeting was called to order by exzavor win H leigh of cedar city chair man of the coulty coul ty committee and upon motion of J G pace mr air t leigh le agh was made chairman of the meeting with john S woodbury acting as secie tary the chairman explained briefly the purposes of the convention and then upon motion duly passed appointed committees on membership resolutions oni and nominations naming A L woodhouse john S woodbury and R J shay respectively as chairmen chairmen of those committees with power to select their own assistance following the committee appointments the chairman introduced a mr air monson alonson of ogden as the chief of the convention who he said would oll olit line the purposes of the association quoting from judge chairman of the state association mr monson said saia that briefly stated the purpose oi of the association is to sell a program to reduce the cott of being governed elaborating on that statement the speaker gave a very comprehensive idea of fl the ue purpose for organizing the association he said the associations watch words are economy and efficiency and that it is their aim to look into inlo all public expenditures and to co operate with public officials in reducing unnecessary expenditures and at the same time avoiding anything wb which ch would detract from the utmost efficiency and encouraging expenditures for those things which are necessary he said educating t the he public to greater interest in what their taxes ate aie being expended f fr far r and in keeping down taxes a as much as is consistent consi stant start with v ith efficiency following folling mr mon mansons s ons sons talk mr thomas P bernes of cedar ced ir city was introduced to talk on the budget law and the independent audit law he gave a very clear explanation of those laws sections from each and explaining their purposes and operation and showing bowing how bow the budget law will operate to reduce taxes lie ile ended his bis talk with an ail appeal for taxing units to get their accounts straightened up so they know at all times they are at and then it is a simple matter to keep them that way county superintendent N T barlow gave a very interesting talk on why the schools dont place more emphasis on the three Rs the in ference being of course that bly the schools are teaching too many subjects and notie none of thern them good enough mr Bai billows lows talk was in a sense a refutation of that idea commenting on the importance of the three Rs he said that while we want all students to be able to write a good legible it hand and yet writing so important in this age as it used to be it is used less he questioned whether arithmetic is being given the emphasis which it used to have but he threw out the challenge that fifty students L picket at random from athe the eighth grade can pass a better beter test in mathematic than an equal number of the business men of cedar city picked in the same fashion As to the waif way reading is being taught t he be was even stronger he said that stu students dents of t ti advy read better than they ever did in the history of the world after defending the way in chic those chose subjects are taught mr barlow pointed out that th the schools of today to day are expected to teach a vast number of other things including vocations health habits babits citizenship and numerous others which are equally important in this age chai chair nan leigh h stated that mr cook of the columbia steel co who is is secretary of the iron county corn cittee was to have made an appeal for members membership bip in the association but that circumstances prevented his being present and so after expressing a few thoughts along that line bini himself self he be called on W R palmer who made a forceful aphea for membership reports of the various committees followed mr woodbury of the resolutions committee moved the adoption of a resolution asking the next legislature to pass a law which would invalidate any future bond election at which less than fifty per cent of the ged fied voters cast their ballots after a lot of discussion for and in opposition to the motion and an attempt to amend it finally acied with a substantial majority A leso ieso ution favoring an independent audit of public funds was also adopted mr shay of the nominations committee moved that the iron county committee as now constituted be retained as pur our committee for arota aryear er year and that the thanks of thus present be extended to them for their past efforts the motion car ried the committee as now eon con includes about a score of our prominent citizens with W H leigh as chairman wilford day vice chairman mr cook as secretary we were unable to get the complete personnel of the committee mr Wood woodhouse hou e of the membership committee offered a resolution that we pledge our support to the association a and use our influence to increase its membership also one that we support our public officials and one that we support the utah taxpayers association motions for their adoption carried and the meeting adjourned there was a large representation of taxpayers from the various communities muni ties of the county present many of whom joined the association at the t ie cloe cloae of the meeting |
