Brothoscopy is the term to describe the inspection of the ,siem of tulies leading into the lungs. Air. as it is inhaled, passes through die l.irvnx, or coice box, and into the .1,1 hea or windpipe. The trachea divides n the chest into two main bronchi winch conduct air to eaih lung, one on ?ither side of the chest. Each of these main bronchi then divides into the bronchi to each lobe of the lung. Within each lobe, the bronchi divide and branch, thus becoming smaller and more numerous so that each tiny area of the lung receives its tiny bronchus. These oronehi are a svstem of branching tidies uid mav be likened to the branches ol i tree. Because of this similarity, it is sometimes called the tracheobronchial Iree. The function or action of this svstem if tubes is to conduct air to and from ihe lungs and to drain the lungs. The i five-hou- Pn-er- . These cilia" as they ate called, wave liaik and forth like oais in a galley, and move flu secretion in an upward direction. When the fluid on the walls of th bronchi become too plentiful or too thick in consistency to be eliminated b the cilia, then a cough occurs and these secretions aie carried upwards by that actum. The instrument used in the examination of the bronchi is called the bronchoscope. Although there are many different tvpes and sizes, the bronc hoscoie consists essentially of a straight, hollow round tube with a tiny electric lamp at the end. Being hullow. it is possible to see through it and to insert into it various instruments. Instruments used frequently through the bronchoscope are telescopes, aspirators. foreeps, dilators, electrodes and magnets. Telescopes make it possible to see off to the side of the bronchoscope. Aspirators are used to open a passageway to the lungs. The collected secretions are used for laboratory examination. Forceps are used to remove tiny pieces of tissue for microscopic examination as well as for the removal of foreign bodies or objec ts that enter the lung. Dilalors are used for stretching areas of bronchial obstruc.mn. Various electrodes are used for cauterizing tumors in the tiachea and bionchi, and magnets are occasionally used in the removal of ceitain tvpes of foieign bodies. Bronchoscopy is an impoitant aid in the diagnosis of many chest diseases. As a diagnostic proceduie, it is done aflc i the usual history is taken, a physical examination has been made, and the various laboratory tests, including ol the chest, have been completed. Bronchoscopy is one of the in modern medical taic which has increased diagnostic accuracy, has great therapeutic value in the treatment of various pulmonary diseases, and its value in the removal of foreign bodies from the lung is a procedure. g Mrs Eva Topham has spent the pas! several days in the northern part of th state Thereis Summer, Thrift with relatives. visiting IR Mr. and Airs.
