Students numbering 17,610 in seventy schools have already received illustrated conservation lectures annually offered to all elementary and high schools by the Utah Department of Fish and Game The department said the current program is expected to reach over 100,000 students before the end of the present school year. One or more of Utahs fish and game resources are shown in these department made moving pictures. Each showing is presented and narrated by a member of the departments educational division. Begun twenty three years ago as a service to the schools in furthering an understanding of the states conservation program, the present program now reaches at least one fifth of Utahs people each year. In addition to this direct educational service, several hundred showings are made each year from the department's library of natural history in sound films. These latter may be obtained from writing or calling the Educational Division Office, Department of Fish and Game, 1596 West North Temple, Salt Lake City. Purchase of an eighty acre property near Milford was announced by the Department dT Fish and Game this week. The property is a rough, uncultivated parcel of land situated in the heavily farmed area of Milford Valley. It will act as a winter feed, nesting and escape area for pheasants in this increasingly popular bird hunting section of the state. A spokesman said it would be open to pheasant hunting during the annual season. Continued to back page This week marks another tragic chapter in Tarowans history: at least to cur way of thinking. Mitchell's Gift and Appliance Store has announcedfa quitting business sale that will continue until the first of January, ifter which time here will be no Mitchell's Gift and Appli-jne- e only another vacant building on Main Street--- a grim reminder that we as a town have let another business fail. Why as a town? Simply we as citizenry have a chronic case of wed rather spend our money in another community and aid their economy, than buy at home and insure that we have one of the best communities in the state. We have just been doing a little rough calculating to try m discover whether or not u'e can afford to have businesses lore, or whether the rest of us just as well join those who lave already been forced out. Parowan lists about 407 families. As a basis for our calculations we have said each family in the community will spend during each year, at least $2,000 for food, clothing, furniture entertainment and other small incidentals. If we are anywhere near correct, our figures would indicate that there are $814,000 spent on these items. Of this total, as nearly as iv e can calculate, the stores here get in the neighborhood of 5175.000 annually, which means the remainder, some $339,-00or almost half goes to aid the growth, of another community. We dont mean to infer either that out of town buying isnt a necessity sometimes, nor do we mean to infer that the blame for it is all on one side. We think local business could with very little effort, do a lot to improve service to customers' of business and one of the first things would be a men to hash problems over. Businesses in most communities have a business mens organization that attempts to discover what to do to better improve service. Secondly, a good advertising campaign to let people know what local stores carry, would pay. Our word doesnt have t be taken on that either, its getting the job done in about nine out of ten communities over the nation. Third, a better system of merchandising would pay off. By values are what this we mean that if hot-shor come-o- n people want, and they are going out of town to get them, then local business has got to offer them also.
