Show funeral services held for alvin benson funeral servi services ces were held this afternoon in the east ward L D S chapel for alvin benson 82 prominent civic and church leader who died tuesday at the iron county hospital after a long illness of asthma and heart trouble he has been afflicted with this trouble for several years and suffered much during recent months the services were conducted by bishop W L adams and commenced with the song sometime well Under understand standby by the combined choirs of the two wards directed by ivan decker with itha at the piano the opening prayer was offered by david matheson after which ormon weight played a violin solo with florence marsden accompanying compa nying speakers were wm win H lyman f and peter H gurr with closing rc marks by bishop adams other musical numbers were a vocal duet come unto me and rest by ray D garner and E ray lyman accompanied compa nied by berta mitchell and the closing song 1 I know that my redeemer lives by the choir the closing prayer was offered by wm win C mitchell and at the cemetery the grave was dedicated by john P orton pall bearers were carlyle and kenneth mitchell doyle rowley sherwin benson hyrum Board boardman marl and ralph buckner all grandsons and grand son in laws of the deceased flowers were in charge of a number of granddaughters of mr benson mr benson was born bom november 17 1859 at parowan carowan Pa rowan a son of richard and phoebe forrester benson he married elizabeth ellen orton in the st george temple on november az 16 1881 and she preceded him in death in may of last year he served in many civic and church capacities besides being active in the farming and livestock raising business and in early day freighting he was the first sheriff of iron county as well as being sheriff before utah was admitted to statehood later he served as deputy sheriff of the iron county he has served in many civic capacities having been mayor of parowan carowan and later a city councilman in 1927 he was chaplain of the state legislature during his entire life he has been a devout church worker and served as a missionary to california in 1897 and 1898 he is survived by two sons clifford H benson of nish washington and alvin A benson of los angeles calif four daughters mrs jane B richards and mrs roberta B rowley of parowan carowan Pa rowan mrs dean B of Al calif and mrs flossie B ramsey of bingham utah he also has thirty grand children and 43 great grand child ren |
