The Skyline Jeep Club staged their eleventh annual Snow Rally February 8 and 9 at Deer Valley in Park City. Going into Deer Valley from out little Park City community was like arriving arriv-ing into another world. People kept coming in a steady stream on foot, cross country skis, snowmobiles, snow-mobiles, horses, dune buggies, bug-gies, and every imaginable type of four-wheel vehicle. Deer Valley was turned into a four-wheelers paradise par-adise with motors reving, mud flying and helmeted drivers smiling. The crowd seemed to be enjoying the competition as much as the participants. There was a lot of cheering and advice being offered by the 4,000 present Saturday and estimated 7,000 Sunday. Manned kite fliers would take to the air every now and then with all eyes squinting skyward. While the Ute Rangers Mounted Posse, out of Salt Lake City, was below be-low patrolingthe pits, decked deck-ed out in western garb sitting sitt-ing atop their mounts. The love for the sport and their machines was quite evident in the names the drivers tagged to their rigs. Some of the names being: Yum-Yum, Green Machine, Rampage, Frisby, Bee Stinger, Sting-er, Vino Fino, Barney and Mistake in Nature. The hill climb was the only event held this year. The general rules were furnish ed by the Intermountain Off-Road Off-Road Racing Association. The races were divided into events and classes. The events were: pick-up trucks, stock jeeps, competition jeeps, sand modified, trail and dune, and competition dune buggies. The classes being labeled H to A, with H the lowest to A the highest class. The prize money consisted consist-ed of 100 percent of the entry fee and 50 percent of the gate receipts. The spectators also got into the act by contributing money to edge the racers on. The first competition to go over the top of the hill was to receive $318.00 in cash and gifts all donated by the crowd. Steve Christen-sen Christen-sen in his flashy dune buggy was the first to zip over the top of the hill. . The land where the race was held was donated by The Greater Park City Company. The event was. organized and run by The Skyline Jeep Club with Orlando Allen, of Salt Lake City, acting as chairman. The club was organized by a group of 'Four Wheelers' in August, 1961 as a recreational recrea-tional organization with membership open to all American Am-erican citizens with legal access to a four -wheel drive vehicle. In 1963 the club was incorporated with the State , of Utah as a nonprofit, non-compulsory non-compulsory organization. Membership in the club re quires that each member conform to State and Federal Fed-eral Laws regarding conservation con-servation and use of public and private land. The club is governed by a Board of Directors consisting con-sisting of elected and appointed ap-pointed officers, according to the Constitution and By-Laws By-Laws of the Skyline Jeep Club. The purpose of the club is to promote the safe use of four-wheel drive vehicles ve-hicles and to provide recreational rec-reational activities for its members. Activities consist of one meeting a month on the first Wednesday, family picnics and outings, weekend week-end trips, socials and competition com-petition runs. The club has participated in civic projects such as Easter Seal Drives, March of Dimes, Telerama, and competition runs. The club has participated in civic projects and many other events. This was the first snow rally held in Deer Valley in seven years. The very first snow rally was held in Deer Valley in 1965. At that time, there were three events: the hill climb, obstacle course and drag race. The next three events were also staged at Deer Valley. The fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth, and tenth snow rallies were conducted con-ducted atEcker'sHillinSny-derville. atEcker'sHillinSny-derville. There were some unique advantages to Ecker's Hill. The hill climb was con- ducted on the landing area of the ski jump, which made it virtually impossible for anyone to 'top' the hill. The steepness of the hills has led to a number of surprises sur-prises for both drivers and spectators. The few turnovers turn-overs that have occured have reaffirmed the rigid rules of safety required of all entrants. en-trants. No one has been severely sev-erely injured while participating par-ticipating in a snow rally. The race results are as follows : SATURDAY, Feb. 8: Event: Pick-Up Trucks: 1, Chuck Olson; 2.
